Asus P9X79 Pro and Intel i7-3820 No Post

Hello Everyone,

I bought this new rig about two months ago and have had nothing but problems with it.

First of all it was working fine then one day it was dead. Turns out the CPU died. I RMA the CPU and Mobo because we didnt know which it was. So Reseller sends me brand new CPU and Mobo.

CPU works fine in my friends mobo which is the ASUS Rampage IV Extreme.

So in my rig it goes like this.

Press power button it powers on all the fans and the Q Code display shows 69 which means "System Agent DXE Initialization is started"

I have tried booting via memok button. I have cleared the CMOS. I have tried updating the BIOS first doing the ROM to CAP converter then trying to flash 2002 and 2104.

Problem is I have no idea if this is actually happening because i cannot get it to post. I have been told that the 3820 doesnt work with this motherboard until you update the BIOS.

All components work I have tested the Video cards, Power Supply, Memory and CPU in another rig and they all work. Stripped it down and did a bench test so Mobo CPU PSU and Vid Card but still not posting.

Any help/suggestions would be very appreciated as I am at my wits end and about the start smashing things very soon lol

Current bios on the board?

The thin white sticker with a bar code along the edge, normally above the 24pin, last 4 digits.

First off, welcome to OCN. cheers.gif

What other components are you working with?

Care to walk us through your experience flashing the bios?

Just going to say the x79 system is super picky with certain ram modules, so knowing that would help and have you tried testing with just one stick? The 3820 was supported pretty early on.

The white sticker says 0906.

The PSU is a Cooler Master Silent Pro M1000
CPU: Intel i7-3820
Memory: Corsair CML8GX3M2A1866C9R (i have 4 sticks of it)
Motherboard: Asus P9X79 Pro
Video Card: MSI N550GTX-Ti (I have two for SLI but only one is installed atm)
HD: OCZ Vertex3 120GB SSD

When flashing the BIOS I start by loading the Rom to CAP converter onto a FAT32 formatted stick and renaming the file to P9X79PRO.ROM

I plug the USB stick into the white USB port and Hold the BIOS button for 3 seconds until it starts to flash. It usually does this for 2-4 minutes sometimes flashing varying in speed. It then stops blinking all together and then I try to power the system on as the converter documentation says it will try to boot twice (mine is not doing this)

After all of this i Try to load the 2002 or 2104 CAP onto the stick and try flashing but it just goes straight to a solid blue light meaning that it cant read it or it just doesnt like it. At this point i think that it did not do the update properly.

This is all I have for now.

THank you for the quick responses grunion and deafboy

First off, it looks like you memory isn't apart of the qualified list. That being said, doesn't mean that it can't work.

Not sure on the P9X79 Pro, but on my RIVE when I did the cap conversion it automatically updated the BIOS as well with the first version. So you shouldn't need to flash it with anything newer (just yet anyways). You didn't even need to update to the CAP. It's certainly possible you borked the BIOS chip but I don't think you did.

I would start off by pulling the battery out for a minute or so (just over 30 seconds if you're in a rush, lol) put it back in and using just one stick of ram and go from there.

Still no go. I will see about borrowing some memory from a friend of mine whom I mentioned before. I doubt it is memory though and I sure hope its not a 2nd bad board as that would make me lose trust in Asus...

When you tried that, what was all plugged in? And what slot did you have the memory in?

Memory stick was in DIMM A1. I tried all 4 sticks in that slot.

24 pin power, 8 pin power on motherboard
Video card
CPU
RAM

That is all that was connected at the time of tested i pull the board from the case too so it was once again a bench test.

Just a question but wouldn't I get at least a post beep even if the memory wasn't compatible?

D1 is the recommended single dimm config.

Pretty sure that board doesn't have a speaker, did you connect one?
What do the on board q-code LEDs indicate?
