Difference between Ventrilo/Mumble and Skype?

Having a strange issue, I recently bought the Moray + headset, and it seemed to work fine at first, but then people began to tell me that I'm really, really quiet in Ventrilo or Mumble, and altering my settings doesn't seem to make much of a difference. Example, in Ventrilo I have people who have me pumped to 800%, and my microphone level is set to 100 and my boost to +30db, and they can still barely hear me.
At first I thought it was a hardware problem, but whenever I talk in Skype people can apparently hear me just fine.
What could Skype be doing so differently from Ventrilo or Mumble?

I have the VIA HD Audio Deck for sound software.

I've used them all over the years. Personally, I like Vent over the others.

However, having said that, our guild, who is growing by leaps and bounds because of GW2 (we also play Rift and other games), has gotten to the point that in order to allow all of our members in Vent at one time, would cost us about $65 a month. That's more than we want to pay.

So we have switched over to another voice chat program, which is slowly growing on me ... and it has totally eliminated the "quiet users" that has seemed to plaque other programs.

It's called Raid Call.

The sound quality is very good too.
