Edit : From a HD 6970 , a GTX 670 is a nice improvement in the latest games like BF3. I don't know how you feel that the improvement is not significant.

It's more like in certain games where I expected improvement I didn't really get it. I might as well kept the other card.

Are you telling me a GTX 670 is not significantly faster than HD 6970 in these games. Thats hard to believe.

It's faster in certain spots but like I mentioned when things REALLY heat up there isn't any real benefit.

It all boils down to FPS/$ getting really low. What were you expecting? For it to be near perfect? You paid 400 $, for hardcore gamers like yourself thats like the medium to spend nowerdays. When you buy 2 and are not happy, thats another ballgame but a single GPU not giving the desired effects seems (yes its sick to say it) almost normal.
Companies are trying to get as much money out of our pockets in all sorts of ways, you just found the hard truth. You think it's not worth it? Don't buy it! In fact, i believe many people just buy cause nvidia has us in their pocket. Be a hero, return the card, wait another year, spend the same money (which will be worth less cause of inflation) and get a better card. Swapping every year just isnt worth it.
If you've got no spare money, 20% upgrade (or less) for 400$ just doesn't seem an efficient way to spend money.

Then something is wrong, lol. I noticed a big improvement from my single 480 setup and even an improvement over my SLI 480 system.

I can only give you proof that the HD 7950 and GTX 670 which are similar in performance when overclocked will be much faster than HD 6970 in BF3 with Ultra 4x AA or Ultra 2x AA

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/03/01/xfx_radeon_hd_7950_black_edition_video_card_review/5
http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/03/01/xfx_radeon_hd_7950_black_edition_video_card_review/7

BF3 2560 x 1600 Ultra 2x MSAA

HD 6970(880) - avg 32.2 min 22 fps
HD 7950 (900) - avg 42.8 fps min 29
HD 7950 (1195) - avg 54.2 min 35 fps

HD 7950 (1150) would be atleast 50% faster than HD 6970(950 Mhz) . the chances of overclocking HD 6970 beyond 950 Mhz are very low. The chances of hitting 1150 Mhz on HD 7950 are better especially with factory overclocked models running at 950 Mhz.

GTX 670 (1300) matches HD 7950 (1195) and should be similarly faster than HD 6970.

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/08/23/galaxy_gtx_660_ti_gc_oc_vs_670_hd_7950/2

Also this is a fraps recording of real world gameplay and not some in game benchmark. So definitely the HD 6970 is no match for a HD 7950 OC or GTX 670 OC

So what you could do is check the GPU temps under load and see that there is no clock throttling.
