Newbie looking for C2D build advice

Hey Gang,

Here's the deal. I've been looking around for a while, and I'm ready to try an OC build for the first time in about 7 years. Here's what I'm looking at:

CPU- E6300 or E6400 CPU

Mobo- Asus P5B Deluxe or GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3

Memory- Crucial Technology 2GB DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300)

Case- Looking for suggestions under $100

Cooling- Scythe SCINF-1000 120mm CPU Cooling Fan/Heatsink

Graphics Card (video editing, not gaming)- Suggestions $150 or less

I welcome and appreciate all input, and really need advice on which CPU will overclock better with these components, and which case and graphics card are best. Also open to other cooling options less than $75. Yes, I'm on a budget. Thanks in advance for the feedback. I'll be sure to post updates on my progress with the build.

Great looking build you got there. A few things:

-Go for the E6400. The higher multiplier will make overclocking a bit easier in case the Crucial can't handle higher fsb.

-Motherboard is a toss up. I'd personally go for the P5B, but either way you'll be happy.

-The Thermaltake Soprano is a great case just in your range.

-Go for a eVGA 7600GT for $150.

-Get the Tuniq Tower 120. Best air cooler by far.

Good luck buying!

Thanks for the suggestions, I forgot about the PSU!

That Crucial RAM overclocks nicely; the E6300 will be just fine. You should be able to hit over DDR2 900 speeds (or maybe even DDR2 1000 speeds) with that RAM. The chips are the same as in the DDR2 800 G.Skill HZ kit.

The motherboard should be the P5B Deluxe. This is not really a toss up... the P5B Deluxe is simply a better overclocker (not that the DS3 is bad... not at all), and has the advantage of the ICH8R Southbridge (RAID over the southbridge, instead of over the PCI bus with the DS3)

regarding case, I would recommend to save a bit on it and get a better PSU:
Case: COOLER MASTER Centurion 5 CAC-T05-UW Black Aluminum Bezel $44.99
PSU: OCZ GameXStream OCZ600GXSSLI ATX12V 600W $119.99

Video Card:
SAPPHIRE 100155L Radeon X1800GTO 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 $159.99

I think it's better than the 7600GT.. 256bit memory controller
