Installing Windows 7 ( Older PC) - Page 2

I have W7 running on an old AthlonXP + Radeon 9600SE + 2GB of RAM biggrin.gif. So yeah, hardware wise you are good. Are you formating the entire drive? Got any other partitions on the drive? Maybe the Windows DVD is messed up. Maybe try using a USB key instead. I remember there is a program for Windows that lets you extract the contents of your DVD and copy them to a USB.

Make sure the partition you are installing to is set as active. It won't boot otherwise.

Failing that, it seems like the DVD might be corrupt. Unless it's a recovery disc with Dell or HP or some other manufacturer's name on it, an "OEM" DVD is identical to a retail one; it's the product key that defines the type of license. As previously stated, you will need to buy a new product key to install on this PC; an Upgrade key will work since the PC had Vista on it previously.

1- Boot into the Windows CD
2 - Hit "repair computer"
3 - if a box pops up that looks for an installation, close it with the X button
4 - go to command line
5 - type diskpart
6 - type list disk
7 - type select disk X, where X is the number of the disk you want to use
8 - type clean
9 - exit and continue with the installation normally

That will get Windows installed. However, that doesn't fix your problem of not having a valid serial, which you will need to activate it.
