Morals are completely subjective. The point of my post is quite obvious. It is unfortunate that you lack the capability to comprehend it.

I'd expect these guys were the only ones who actually paid for the games/movies they uploaded, since they would have had to purchase them to rip them and upload them.

So really, they didnt steal the games/movies at all - they simply uploaded the ripped media to the internet, and then others stole it.

Nah, his argument went as soon as he tried to insinuate my age because I said his post was fail and his topic of discussion (game piracy) has nothing to do with the topic of this thread (Imagine, a movie scene release group).

To him, it was just an excuse to rant about videogame piracy and incorrectly assert theft == piracy.

People Can and do justify many things more heinous then piracy, often on a daily basis. And yes, morals are subjective, most people would agree it's not all right to murder, plenty of people would say that there is nothing wrong with a little white lie....

Also for the sake of argument, What if the content is something that is no longer distributed such as Disney's Song of the South?

You can still buy that, on DVD, on eBay for $39. Other sites have it listed for as little as $10. wink.gif

But your point is taken.

But fear not, even with the insane Copyright Term Extension Act in force. Song of the South will be "Public Domain" in 2021 (75 years from it's release).

Personally, I think they should repeal that law and return the Copyright law to it's former length of time, but that is another issue. Either way, I do not think that stealing is a good way to oppose a law. If you don't like the law, fine, change it. Don't ignore the law, then whine when you are caught and put in jail over it.

IMO piracy is only ethically wrong if you would've actually paid for the product had the option to pirate been unavailable.

And piracy is very different from stealing. If I could create a copy of my phone and give it to people for free I definitely would.

Yeah my brother bought one of those eBay ones...turned out to just be a ripped version off a Japanese laser disc so you are just paying for pirated goods that way, so what's the difference?

The point I'm making is simply that things are subjective and fairly easy to justify given the right example. Here's another one, you can't wait for the avengers to come out on blue ray and have even pre ordered it...is it all right if u notice that it gets uploaded before release to download and watch it as long as you purchase the hard copy?

Exactly. Theft being immoral is completely subjective.

For instance, what if some guy was selling discs of child pornography on the streets. You "stole" all those discs and burned them. You just committed theft. But was it immoral? Obviously, no.

Of course, assisted suicide is the biggest subjective moral of the century. It is widely regarded that killing someone is immoral. But is killing a person who suffers in pain 24/7 from an illness, who ask to be killed, wrong? Well that is completely up for debate and is not inherently immoral.

It would by law, still be illegal. The content is still copyrighted and therefore copying it is illegal. Even if it is the only means to obtain it anymore.

Therein lies a complete logic gap in most people's rage against pirates.

If you go and watch a music video, or part of a TV show, or part of a movie,or anything copyrighted (under most circumstances) on Youtube, you just committed copyright infringement.

You viewed copyrighted material without express permission of the owner. (Which is why many videos are taken down, by the way.)

It is exactly the same thing as downloading an illegal torrent. The video you watch on Youtube is downloading the same data.

How many people here have ever watched something like that on Youtube? I'm betting nearly all of you.

Should you be jailed and fined for half a million dollars?

(Granted the cases are a bit different, but the principle is the same.)
