Overclocking Q&A Help

Thread Starter
Hello every1! This is my second new thread. And my question is about overclocking(or not) but i just bought a new RADEON card, and a new motherboard, CPU and PSU. And i am wondering if anything i have can be a bottleneck or whatever it's called. Because whenever i play BF3 on ultra with 64person map. i have some small FPS laggs, and with my gear i should not have that. Or maybe i should idk. But i recently clocked my new GPU from 1200 to 1217. the card came with a clock of 1050 but it has a "lethal boost" button that clocks it to 1200. and i clocked abit from there cause i would think the lagg would be removed with alittle more clock speed. My CPU is on a clock of 3.9 atm. (can be clocked more) but i dont think i need to. I am wondering, if my GPU is the reason for the lagg, or if my CPU is. or if it is anything else. And if i need to clock more that any1 of you could help me with that. Cause i dont have much understanding for voltage, clock, or temperature, whenever i clock to much or too little. And if i clock my GPU to 1220 the BF3 just stops. like an half a hour ingame. The game just stops. and i cant go back into it. Any1 have an idea what i can do. Because when i bought this new GPU i looked at a test link. and the guy had clocked his same card as i have to 1280 and it worked fine.

Here is my GEAR

GPU:
Sapphire Radeon HD 7970 GHz 6GB GDDR5 "TOXIC"

CPU:
AMD FX-8150 8-Core Processor

Motherboard:
Crosshair V Formula

PSU:
COOLER MASTER SILENT PRO GOLD ATX12V 2.3 1000W

RAM:
Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600MHz 4GB CL9 (X2)

MY question is. why do i have the small FPS lagg in BF3. And here is the link to the guys who benchmarked this card and tested it.: http://www.tweaktown.com/articles/4836/sapphire_radeon_hd_7970_ghz_edition_toxic_6gb_video_card_overclocked/index2.html

And why cant i clock it up to 1280? when i clock it to 1220 BF3 just closes after 30-60 minutes ingame? THANKS for answers etc.
It means alot!

From a worried Gamer.

What is the monitor resolution you play with? try switching off V-Sync.....

Not all cards are created equally but I'm pretty sure you need to increase the voltage to get up to that speed.
Since the game doesn't crash instantly and lasts for almost an hour, you might just need a little fine tuning.

I use MSI Afterburner to oc gpu's (Clocks/voltage & fan) :
http://downloads.guru3d.com/downloadget.php?id=2952&file=1&evp=c56e125ad642438528197dd993742e91

Here's a quick guide to oc'ing the 7970:
http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/06/21/amd_radeon_hd_7970_ghz_edition_video_card_review/6

But honestly, I dont think your lagg problem well be resolved even if you oc your 6GB 7970 (already running @ 1200MHz).
Dont' forget, BF3 is huge power hog and my 580's sometimes have a hard time with ultra settings @ 1920x1080. Oc'ing your 8150 north of 4.2GHz might be a bit more helpful....

OP try and get your AMD FX CPU to 4.2 - 4.4 Ghz if you have a good cooler. BF3 needs a lot of resources. Also the reason you are not able to run at 1220 Mhz might be that your GPU needs more voltage to go beyond 1200 Mhz. Use Sapphire trixx and push the voltage to 1.3 Ghz. But beware of the temps on the GPU core and VRMs. your card can become unstable if your temps are not kept under control. Increase fan speed and keep core temps under 75c and VRM temps below 100c. use an app like HWinfo32 to monitor the GPU core and VRM temps. Also what cooler do you have for the FX CPU. you need a good cooler to keep the CPU cool at 4.4 Ghz..

Thanks so much for replying! But the link shows another video card. My card comes much more clocked and can be clocked more than that card. That was the Ghz edition mine is toxic edition.tongue.gif But what you said about the CPU that i needed to clock it more. I think also that might be my problem. But can you advise on clock the CPU when i did it with ATI catalyst control center. it auto clocked itself to 3,9 and lagged ingame in BF3 however the voltage didnt rise. so i can use Asus itweak it auto clock the CPU adjustes the fans voltage and clock itself. But why does the BF3 crash ingame?

And btw i play with a resolution on 1920 x 1080 without vsync

Thanks! I will certainly try that. But aint there a software used to monitor and test if you GPU is stable/unstable? And since i have already tried to set my CPU to 3,9 with CCC it lagged so much in BF3 that i had to quit at the same moment i came in? is that the voltage or ?

Firstly if its badly lagging and unplayable then its a problem. first test your card with stock settings in Heaven 3.0 . check temps in HWinfo32. it has an option to log temps by saving to a file. check out the GPU and VRM temps while running Heaven. if GPU temps are at 70 - 75c and VRM temps at 85 - 90c then ok. if higher then you need to improve cooling. maybe its your case which needs better cooling. also check CPU temps in the log. anything above 70c is very high

Thanks so much for taking the time to help me!. Now last night i got my new CPU cooler Corsair H40 watercooling.....And a new SSD:P (had to say it) so now i can clock abitt more on my CPU without it overheating itself. But as far as i stand about OC im blank. Uhm...the other day "as mentioned before" i tried to use CCC or amd control centre or w/e and tried to clock the Cpu to 3.9 and it started to lagg. i dont know what this is. But no voltage was increased. SO here i am now. Blank and blank about if the CPU got my tiny tiny fps lagg when i just tried my new GEAR at first. SO if anything a little help about oc'ing my CPU is deeply appreciated. If this was about voltage i lagged. Or how i increase voltage without destroying it? And atleast if any1 can tell me how i overclock on a GPU. Specially mine.
PS: and installed thoose two drivers you said. 12.8 - and 12.7
THANKS

-best regards.
