fat ps3 issue, cause?

Thread Starter
so got a free ps3 yesterday for part of a build i'm doing.
push the power button kicks on of just a sec, no video, 3 beeps, and the red light flashes.

is the issue here that the gpu and cpu need reflowed?
have a heat gun..

the rrod xbox i had didn't need anything other than the x-bracket removed to get it working. however i know nothing about ps3 or their issues.

just an update.
been reading a lot of different info all over the web.

some said it could be a faulty HD, took it out, still same issue.
since it was out and i have the cm690 ii, plugged it into my pc and the drive works. if nothing else i have a 60gb hd that works.

got a heat gun and other info says that you need to reflow the solder either doing it professional, heat gun, or oven.
so heat gun it is.

if you would like to watch the process live, let me know below and i'll set up a day and time.. would like to get cracking on this soon so i can see if i can get it working. can stream it working with a game also if i can snag a controller and game from a friend.

I have an original 60GB PS3 as well. A while ago, it gave me the YLoD. It was out of warranty, so I opened her up and re-did the thermal paste and gave all the internals a good cleaning. Another thing I read online is to keep the console in a horizontal orientation. I did that for the longest time without reapplying thermal paste and it got rid of my YLoD, I only really replaced the thermal paste for peace of mind in the long run and also cause I was bored one day. I never had to heat gun mine, although most site recommend you do this to fix a YLoD. Either way, if you can get it fixed, you will have a very solid free console thumb.gif

i'm not even getting ylod
just power, beeps, no power, flashing red.

theres a lot of info on the ylod but don't seem to find anyone with the same situation that i have.

i'm going to do a lot more digging over the next day or two just to make sure that it's not something else.
i got it for free so even if i destroy it, no biggie.

Dont reflow. to me it sounds like a bad bluray drive. make sure everything is properly connected inside.(power supple is grounded and is plugged in all the way. and bluray drive ribbon and power is in.

my buddy has a slim with a dead bluray in it, but can still use the rest of the ps3.
is he just lucky or do issues vary depending on the bluray issue?

Try turning off the main switch flipping the switch back on while holding eject. The fan will run at 100% for 15 seconds. Afterward it will TRY to boot normally. if it fails it will be the YLOD

I had a fat 80 that after a while started giving the ylod. I did a reflow myself, pretty easy. Threw the main board in the oven for 15 minutes at 400f. If you're brave enough you could give that a try, just dont go stomping around until it's cooled.

I have repaired a hand full of YLODs, which brings me to my next question did it flash a yellow light for about half a second before turning red?

My friend got the ylod on his 60gb ps3 that had low firmware so he sent it to endless electronics. I don't remember how much he paid but it was bad it was reballed with lead soldier then it would work for a few months then die again then send it back. I think he did that like 3 times before he took their offer for a new refurbished 60gb. It comes with a 1 or 2 year warranty.
