Custom Desk Motherboard board built in

Thread Starter
Hey OCN,

I wanted a desk that would fit 4+ 27 inch monitors plus my labtop and my work labtop. I started looking around and quality oak desk and that was gone to cost a arm and leg. I decided to design one and build with my dads input on the design and the build process. I'm no carpenter by any means; I'm a engineer and cnc programmer. My dad how ever is the carpenter and has done some great finish carpentry

Please understand this just a rough design I will be updating as make design changes and start building the project. I haven't design alot of the features yet and modeled some of the brackets. I did some more modeling will post updated pictures.

I'm gone to keep this short and sweet.

Please leave comments and/or questions.

Here are some pictures:

( Monitors are 27 inch)

Features:

1.(Removable Tray) Built in Motherboard
2.Watercooling tubes will be ran in the desk
3. Top loading Slot DVD Drives
4. Top USB Ports and Power button right under the motherboard
5. Hidden power supply/ Radiators/ Fan controller
6. Wire mangement
7. Spots for my audio receiver and cable box
8. Custom Drawers for pencils/ engineering books.
9. Easy way to dissemble the desk.
10. Platform on the back for the server

Top- 3/4 inch Oak plywood
Rest- White oak hardwood
Brackets- Will be custom machined at work

Sorry for the grammar. I'm no english major lol.

^It will happen.

I finally have some time to finish a big project like this.

I just want to design it right the first time. I'm posting here to jump start it lol. I often get blinded by one way; I figured posting here some of you guys would have some other ideas.

I want to have it design 100% by End of September and start building shortly after that.

Since you're going to have laptops on the desk, consider the possibility of wall mounts for the monitors, if only for the outer 2.

The only other problem I see is making sure that you get a powerful pump, but that depends on how far the tubing will go.
Where do you plan on putting the keyboard? I assume over the cutout, which would be covered by acrylic.

I'm running two mcp 355 in series right now. I think that should enough if I don't crazy with the tubing.

Yes, the cutout will be covered with acrylic. Keyboard and mouse will be under the cut out after usb hub/power button/audio jacks. I was thinking about running a KVM switch.

The wall mounts is good idea but I would have wait until I move though.

I see a problem with the placement of the top loading dvd drives. These are about 6-8" in length and since the most common desk height is 28" you will be banging your knees and legs into these constantly, damaging either the drive or the disks. I would suggest horizontal mounting or locating them against the sides of the cubbies.

I would also be worried about getting the motherboard deep enough to mount graphics cards and stuff without running into the same problems. Perhaps moving this off to one of the sides? I don't mean to nitpick your project, but this desk just screams showing off your board in a "Dood! your desk is your case! ***, that's awesome!" kind of way. you dont want to interfere with that by covering your mb with a keyboard.

I will sit pretty far away from the two back moniters. I have few inches till my knees hits the fans.

I had my gf take some measurements of sitting at the desk before I even can up with this design. thumb.gif
