Looking for some help on buying my new rig

Thread Starter
So as you can see in my rigbuilder thing my computer isn't too great. I'm looking for an upgrade. (I'm not sure if I should try to sell my old computer)

I want to do:
-gaming
-visual arts
-programming and testing
-and of course, all the general stuff

Here's what I've been thinking so far:
Mobo - Asus Sabertooth Z77 (or P8Z77-V?)(Or should I go for a ROG?)
CPU - Intel Core i7 3770 (K? S? Whats the difference?)
RAM - I'll figure it out once I have everything else finalized
GPU - EVGA Geforce GTX 660? (I'm wanting to buy one now, then possibly add a second later on)
PSU - I would like a modular one, that would be nice
Case - No idea
Cooling - been thinking about liquid, or non-stock CPU cooler
Mouse, keyboard, monitor, speakers - gonna use my current ones still
Subwoofer - just bought a Pioneer SW-8

What do you all think!? smile.gifbiggrin.gif:D:)

Hey. I think you are on the right track. Personally I am not a huge fan of the ASUS motherboards as I find they are a little overpriced compared to their competitors. You might also want to read the ASUS RMA horror stories that plague USA.

Not sure what you mean by visual arts but if you are doing graphic or video editing then 3770 is the way to go.

K - Unlocked (adjustable CPU multiplier up to 63 bins)
S - Performance-optimized lifestyle (low power with 65W TDP)
T - Power-optimized lifestyle (ultra low power with 35-45W TDP)

Go with the 3770k if you want to overclock otherwise I would just go with the standard 3770. I'm not sure about the S or T models. Hopefully someone else can enlighten you. As for ram I think 8-16gb of 1600 cl9 or cl8 should be just fine. 50-100 bucks. Many would recommend corsair, seasonic or antec for PSU. Personally I'm a fan of corsair. As for case corsair is second to none. I would recommend looking at their cases. Other then that I have no clue what you want from a case.

Hope this helps.

Thanks! This helps a lot.

So I'm pretty sure about 3770k.
Would you have any other recommendations for Motherboards?
What is cl9 and cl8 RAM?

BTW when I say visual arts I mean Photoshop, After Effects, Maya, etc.

I think the favorites for motherboards is always MSI, ASUS, and Gigabyte. I mean there is nothing wrong with ASUS I would just be hesitant as an American customer because of the USA rma horror stories. Are there any specific requirements you have from a motherboard aside from overclocking? SLI? CFX? 4 way SLI? How many sata do you need? Do you want auto Overclock, dual bios?

CL8 and CL9 is the CAS latency. I think 1600 mhz with a CAS of 9 is your regular old standard ram for 1155 socket boards. You could go more expensive but imo it's not worth it as you won't notice any real world difference, only minor differences in benchmarks or select applications.

Do you have a preferred vendor I can help pick out some parts to recommend from the website?

So would you suggest an MSI/Gigabyte Z77 or something different?

I have been looking through newegg.com, but I have bought from tiger direct before. As long as they're cheap and trusted. Maybe someplace with a military/student discount?

Personally I am a big fan on MSI so I would recommend them. I have never used Giga. If I were going to recommend a board for the 3770k to overclock I would get the board I own. MSI Z77A-GD65 paired with possibly some ram like this. G.Skill ARES or G.Skill Ripjaws X .

Have you looked into aftermarket CPU coolers at all? Would you like some suggestions?

Alright, thanks for those.

I haven't looked into cooling too much. I've been wondering air vs liquid. Sound isn't a huge deal but I'm definitely not using the stock CPU cooler.

How about these cases?

Don't know the brand, but the don't look too bad and are really cheap.

I like the Rosewill Challenger It has good cooling, tool-less drive bays, and painted interior for only $50.
If you are going to overclock that unlocked CPU, I would invest in some good aftermarket cooling, as Ivy Bridge CPUs tend to get very hot.

If you want to go with water cooling, try Corsair's H80
If you want to stick to air, try Coolermaster's ever-popular Hyper 212 Evo
