5.1 analog to S/pdif converter

Thread Starter
Hey all,

My motherboard has on board digital but none of my games will recognize it as anything more than 2.0. My analog works perfectly but my current 5.1 head unit does not play back any sound below like 200hz out the main speakers, it all goes to the sub.

Using digital all channels get the full 20hz to 20khz range.

I was wondering if such a thing existed to take the three plug analog sound that games recognize as 5.1 and convert it to S/pdif (DTS or Dolby)

I did some digging around Google and found nothing. Plenty of digital to analog but I want the other way lol

As for a price range, if it is cheaper than finding a 7.1 (would most likely upgrade from my 5.1) receiver with multi-channel analog inputs I would consider it.

Thanks all!

I would just buy a sound card. I doubt that that exists and if it would it would be expensiver than a decent soundcard.

I have a decent sound card, it is my head unit that that can't do it.

Please read the OP closer next time before responding (not trying to be mean just pointing something out)

Thanks for the bump though

Sound card is not my issue though, yes I do want to eventually get a better one but my on board does all I could ever want it to for now. Also, no sound card that I know of will do what I want it to do, 5.1 via optical from games, windows just does not work that way

The issue is not the on board sound it is my amp/receiver

Most of the (popular) soundcards should do what you want, you just need a live DDL/DTS (if your reciever supports both) encoder and a new soundcard is prolly the cheapest way you'll get one. At a rough guess anything above the DG for Asus and above the Extreme Music for Creative but I'm not at all sure on that and would have to check specific models. I do have 5.1 (DDL) over TOSLINK from Windows though.

With games?

I can get 5.1 via digital from windows if the movie I am watching is encoded with it but other than that it just picks it up as a 2.0 source

Yep, a movie is just passed straight through and it's pre-encoded. For Windows and games in windows (as long as they support 5.1) you need the live encoders (it's either DolbyDigitalLive or DTS-Connect (not just DolbyDigital or DTS)). Most of the games I have support 5.1. Quite a few soundcards and a few onboards have them and as I said a soundcard would be the cheapest way if your receiver doesn't support/or you don't want to use 5.1 analogue.

My apologies to both of you then, when I did the research I was told it was impossible.

Is it just a feature of sound cards now or is it a extra piece of software?

It's a bit of both. Since you need the software to choose the option.

The newer Realtek chips should actually support DTS and DDL. The option should look like this actually.
