[TRINITY APU] AMD Socket FM2 - Motherboard Discussion & Gallery - Page 25

Also, I contacted Zotac, and their m-itx boards wont have overclocking so thats a big no no for me.

What do you mean no overclocking options (I'm kind of new to overclocking)? If I have an unlocked APU, won't I be able to up its frequency?

Like I said, I'm new to overclocking. As far as I know, there are 2 ways to up the frequency: upping the bus speed (motherboard's) and upping the CPU multiplier (CPU's). At least this must have been the case in the past. Upping the FSB, also overclocks the memory, correct? So what did they tell you from Zotac, that you won't be able to use higher than 1866MHz FSB (that's the memory frequency listed on their site)? How about GPU overclocking (the 7660D on the APU)?

I also did a mini research on the Zotac brand name. Searched a lot of other forums for opinions and checked out reviews. Turns out, it's a really good brand: hardly any negative talk about it, with almost everyone saying they're satisfied, occasionally mentioning good RMA processes, lifetime warranties on GPUs (!), and all this while keeping in mind that you usually hear only the bad things people have to say about a brand (nobody posts to say they're having no problems with their hardware).

I'm updating the ASRock ITX as having a "high failure rate" and will be warning others to avoid it.

I'm pretty sure that the GPU and the CPU feed off of the same main phases, with the IMC using a +1 phase just like in Socket FM1 and previous sockets.

Upping the bus speed is how you overclock a "locked" CPU. Upping the multiplier is how you overclock a "unlocked" CPU, for example the A10-5800K.

But if the motherboard's BIOS doesn't have the option to change your bus speed or multiplier, you won't be overclocking anything at all, my friend.

You understand now? smile.gif

False alarm, the board is good.

Family members can't do the basics with the computer. However I do believe them when they said it wouldn't turn on. might have to keep my eye on it even further to see if it'll fail. If so I might just ditch the whole trinity setup and go with a intel Z77/H77 ITX with a AMD 7XXX GPU.

Rei86 were you going to post that you thought you also had a failure? Well.... that post is completely blank, as in there's nothing on it.

I think it's a safe assumption to avoid that motherboard. I've never seen so many consistent failure rates of a product posted on OCN. It's a shame because it's the most available ITX FM2 board.

On another note has anybody else read up on Richland???

Quote:
According to the roadmap, AMD Richland APU would not feature the steamroller core architecture but instead would be based on the current generation x86 Piledriver core architecture which is currently being used within the recently launched Trinity APUs. Along with it, ARM cores would also be fused on the same die for AMD’s HSA (Heterogeneous System Architecture) enhancements. The APUs would remain compatible with the FM2 socket boards and would be include the latest Radeon Cores 2.0 which would presumable fall under the HD 8000 series (Sea Islands) specs. The AMD Richland APU would be the mainstream/performance entry level chips and would launch around mid-2013.

Yep. Out of seven owners, four fires and one non-violent death. The odds of having a housefire with one of these are stronger than assuming that Apple's stock will rise from one month vista lol.

About Richland, I was reading into Kaveri (which according to AMD themselves is not cancelled and will launch as scheduled); which is supposed to be Piledriver CPU cores with GCN-based graphics.

Richland I thought was going to be SR+GCN/Solar System?

I don't know why its showing up as blank...posted it on my phone at work.

got a call from home telling me the htpc wouldn't turn on no matter what they did. The system's been sitting there with no change what so ever from the previous day so they had me confused a bit. came home and checked things out and turned on just fine.

I won't say I have a special board (knock on wood) as some of you have stated (and reading newegg reviews) when even in BIOS the board and CPU reached 60deg.
In light of all the failures I must say I'll be keeping a closer eye on my board and can only hope for the best.

To damn bad all we have right now is the MSi board and this ASRock board in ITX form factor. Wish Asus would release board.
