I bought my daughter a Gateway NV55S05U last Christmas and the fan sounds like it may be failing. The laptops fan makes a faint grinding sound when at max speed (she plays Blacklight Retribution on it against my recommendations and has had a few thermal shutdowns). I am trying to find a replacement fan rather but can find no replacement parts online other than screens and batteries. I COULD just give her my G53JW which is gathering dust and still runs like a champ but she hasn't taken the best care of the Gateway (broken USB port) and I am reluctant to give her the Asus since it cost me 4 times what the Gateway did.

I honestly love this cooler, but I think I'm gonna move on to another one soon, it just looks... A bit to bland compared to other flaming red (literally) coolers on the market.

Fan issues should be covered under warranty, I'd try Gateway support first. As a quick band-aid fix you could try undervolting the CPU with K10Stat; it'll probably drop temps by 5-10C so that might be enough to stop blackscreens. Alternatively, you could take the case bottom off, look at the fan (perhaps measure it as well), and compare it with other fans. They should be *moderately standard* for basic 15" Acers and Gateways, since Acer owns both brands. Kind of a long shot but it may be the same fan used in an Acer Aspire 5560 (both are 15" laptops with A8-3500M). http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=acer+fan+5560&_sacat=0&_odkw=acer+aspire+fan&_osacat=0
edit: Looks like the trick was, search for the first ~5 characters: "gateway NV55 fan", and "gateway NV55S fan" both turn up some results. Not sure if there's a difference between the NV55S* and NV55C*, if there isn't.. lots more NV55C fans, some might be a bit cheaper (edit2: 55C is Intel, 55S is AMD, 55S came out a year later.. so I'm not sure they're compatible). http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=gateway+fan+nv55s&_sacat=0&_odkw=gateway+fan+nv55&_osacat=0
