Looking for build advice.

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I'd post in Intel or amd but it's up in the air.

This is for a friend. I'm at work or ideas look through other threads.

Budget: $1200 max. Prefer $1000
Main uses: light gaming. Not an overclocker. No folding. Internet, word, movies.
He does have a tv that I think will be the monitor. I'll update if I'm wrong.
He has 0 preference on brands.
He'd like this case. Found it clearance at micro center http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811352005.

Thanks for any opinions

I'd take the i5 2500k route paired with a 7950. Seasonic 500w PSU, 8GB DDR3, 128gb SSD and 2TB HDD. Asus or Gigabyte Z77 mobo.

i wouldnt get that ssd, ram, or video card. that motherboard is also overpriced for the budget. i would get a kit of samsung 8gb for $47, a samsung 830 series ssd, a basic z77 motherboard like an ASRock Z77 Extreme4 and an ivy bridge 3550. the rest of the money (i havent done the math) should go to a video card like a 7850, 7870, 7950, 660ti

Asrock Z77 Extreme4 and a 3570k (with a decent heatsink) is probably the way to go with your budget.

op clearly said he won't be overclocking, etc. so recommending a K processor, Z77 motherboard etc. is a bit wasteful.

Intel Core i5-3550
ASRock H77 Pro4
8GB Samsung MV-3V4G3D/US (2x4GB) DDR3
128GB Samsung 830
1TB Western Digital Caviar Blue WD10EZEX
Sapphire HD7850
Rosewill RG530-S12 530W
Fractal Define XL

~$900

or something along those lines...

not sure what light gaming means, so you can adjust the graphics card for what he needs smile.gif

He mentioned skyrim and one newer game. So a decent graphics card. Monitor is like a 32". He will need mouse and keyboard though. Yes on windows. I'll Prolly just buy a code and burn an iso for him. Yes on dvd drive. No blue ray as far as I know.

a 7850 will handle skyrim as well as other newer games fine at 1080p.. obviously, depends how involved he is; whether he wants constant 60fps with all aa enabled etc. but for "light" gaming, it's more than fine.
by all means, change it to something more powerful if need be.

keyboard and mouse, again, up to you.. you could get a basic logitech $20 keyboard and mouse bundle which would be fine.. or you can get him a $100+ mechanical keyboard and dedicated mouse.

maybe get a smaller case since you're getting a mATX board?
