my 1st htpc

Thread Starter
I was getting pretty tired of buffering and what not from streaming from my pc to my xbox so i figured id go ahead and make a htpc. this is my first one, ive never made a dedicated one before and i wanted to keep cost down. since amd has the apu's now i really wanted to try one out plus it would be cheaper than getting a am3+ plus a video card.

this is what i bought today

also already had two 500 gig caviar blacks, after i got home i realized i probably should have got a cheap ssd for the OS but i can alway upgrade later.
put the OS on one hdd for now, also have a 2 tb external that is pretty much full. gonna try and get a couple 2 tb internals later on once i fill these up. this is only for media playing so i didnt go all out on a lot of things like ram and adding a video card.

put the computer together today and got it up and running and i gotta say it works a lot better than i was expecting. i dont currently have any bluray or 1080p videos to test but i tried a mkv 720p movie today and it worked flawless. the case is very small, was hoping for more room for hdd but im sure it will be a few year before i need more room.

any suggestions on what i should have went with or what i should upgrade in the near future please feel free, im well aware that there is a new fm2 socket coming out but i dont really care at this point, im never on the ball with new stuff anyways, its much cheaper than buying it right when it comes out.

One trick I've not tried is adding 4 Gb more RAM and using a Ramdisk for the file you are watching, rather than keeping the HDD's spinning...

Just a thought.

SSD will help start-up and general snappiness, but isn't a massive loss in the HTPC, IMHO.

Enjoy !

Ive just build a HTPC aswell, i put in a SSD and LOVE it!

From flat startup to mediaportal being fully open is all around about 15 seconds, just enough time to grab a beer and sit down.
