Need help choosing Case, really stuck. CoolerMaster HAF XM, Storm Trooper or NZXT Switch 810?

Hey guys, just sold my second rig to a friend and I need to get a new Case as I already have all the components to build a system except a Case. The Case I was using was the original CoolerMaster 690 with a side panel window. I'm going to have a 3770K in this rig with a Noctua NH-D14 cooling it, so I need good clearance on the side for the Noctua.

My main system is in an HAF X so I am kind of used to CoolerMaster Cases.

What I am looking for in a new Case are these features :

-Good Air Cooling as ambient temps can get quite warm here
-At least 8 PCI expansion slots
-Case that can fit E-ATX sized Mother boards in it
-Dust filters would be good, but not a big deal as I can take it outside every few months and blow out the dust with a Air Compressor that has a Air Regulator/Moisture filter installed

Cases I am currently looking at are as follows with Australian pricing in brackets - CoolerMaster HAF XM ($150), CoolerMaster Stormtrooper ($189), NZXT Switch 810 ($229). I'd say that the HAF XM is currently at the top of my list, with the Switch at the bottom as I recently read a review at Anandtech that showed it doesn't have great overall cooling, and it's also the most expensive of the 3 Cases here in Australia.

Regarding the MB size, I assume E-ATX is more common than XL-ATX? I wanted to get a Case with expandability so I can use larger sized MBs if I upgraded to a bigger MB.

Anyway, I've been ready to build this system for over a week now, but I just can't decide on which Case to get wink.gif. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Wow, I was in the same position as you. I had these same three cases in mind. I ended up getting the Storm Trooper. Best case I've EVER used. Period. I borrowed my friend's HAF XM, but I liked the Storm Trooper SO much more. It has better features.

Reasons
-It has so many more features than the HAF XM.
-The little box at the bottom is so convenient. You'll use it lol
-When you buy the windowed version, it makes the inside look AWESOME.
-Can support 240/360 radiators. It can also support one on the bottom! With SLIGHT modding of course.
-THE HANDLE
-I love the HDD cages. You can rotate them.

Yes, it fits E-ATX no problems. I have a Maximus V Formula in mine..and I would say E-ATX is much more common than XL ATX. Idk anyone that owns an XL ATX board. Those are server boards I think? I'm currently sleeving my PSU. If you want to see pictures of my Trooper, I'll post some this thursday/friday. Trust me you won't regret buying the trooper.

if you mean "eatx" boards like the rampage 4 extreme(it's actually closer to the ssi ceb spec), and not true eatx there are tons of mid towers that can fit boards like that
for boards like that, silverstone raven rv03 and antec eleven hundred/p280(supports xl-atx, proof of RIVE support: http://www.overclock.net/t/1212803/whats-the-most-efficient-self-contained-way-of-water-cooling-an-antec-eleven-hundred-case )

those are the only two i can think off right now, well maybe the corsair 650d

Thanks for the reply. I read that the Stormstrooper can fit E-ATX boards like the R4E and M4E boards so that is why I left it on the list. Not sure if it can fit true E-ATX sized boards though?

Two knocks I found on the Stormtrooper is that the side panel with the window doesn't allow you to mount a fan. Is a side panel fan important in regards to cooling? From my limited research I have found that Cases which have a side panel fan usually have the best vid card cooling? I was looking at the HAF XM with the non window side panel and I was going to mount a 200mm BitFenix Spectre Pro fan there, also with the HAF XM you can mount 2 x 120mm fans on the HDD cages blowing directly at the video cards from the font of the Case to the back of the Case.

The other knock I had with the Stormtrooper is the max video card length you can install is only about 33cm. Do you guys think that is adequate enough for possible newer video cards? What's the current longest vid card length? I'm not asking about length of old school cards, just length of the current cards in the last couple of generations.

The trooper can fit true E-ATX boards. There really aren't any out there anyways. They all have different lengths. Most are just a couple CM bigger than ATX.

I think you underestimate the power of the CoolerMaster fans that come with the case. If you get the window on the HAF XM, you also lose the ability to mount side fans. So that really shouldn't be a negative on just the trooper. It should be for the trooper AND Haf XM. By the way, you can only mount 2 140mm fans for the side panel on the HAFXM. You can't mount a 200mm. Tell me, what 140mm fans are good? Lol. If you really want side cooling, you don't get the window. You can turn the HDD cages in the Trooper, so air is going from the front of the case towards the back. I think you're thinking of the Trooper for this one.

The longest card is 11 inches. I don't think it's 33cm. It's definitely WAY more than that. I would say about 15". Even with an 11" card, you still have TONS of room. I have a GTX 680, which is 10", and I still have probably 4 to 5 inches of space. The HAF XM actually loses to the Trooper with GPU length. You just need to turn the HDD cages..

Yes you can have a 200mm fan on the side of the HAF XM. It's here in the specs http://www.coolermaster.com/product.php?product_id=6821

Also, you can have a max length video card of 35.4cm and 46.3cm if you remove the top HDD cage on the HAF XM.

It's kind of hard for me to explain about 2 x 120mm fans blowing onto the video cards so here is a video instead showing what I mean http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opf6nN0ndr0&feature=related (about 3 minutes into the video you will see what I mean).

Having said all that, I would prefer a Case with a side panel window though, but just not sure how good they are for video card cooling if they don't have fans on the side panel. I assume you friend has the HAF XM that has the window panel?

What do you guys think about video card cooling without a fan/s on the side panel? What size fans does the non window version of the Stormtrooper use? 120mm x 2?

I know what you mean about the intake fans... hmmsmiley02.gif. lol.

You're fine without side fans. If anything, they create a ridiculous amount of noise and just look horrible. It's 120mm x 2. If you're concerned about video card cooling, get a better cooler for your video card. Putting noisy fans on the side will not benefit your cooling that much...What's wrong with just one front intake...? I don't understand people's worry about cooling..

I'm not gonna argue anymore really. Lol. Trooper is a better case, by far. HAF XM is an AIR COOLING CASE. Note: HAF (High Air Flow) It's obviously going to have better air cooling performance. Other than good air flow, it's just a meh case. The trooper has good air AND water cooling. HAF XM, not so much with water. That's why I say get the trooper. It is the ultimate gaming case. If you want good air flow, get the HAF XM. Full towers are meant for water cooling and DECENT air flow. You seem to be all about good air, so get the HAF XM.

Ambient temps is pretty much the reason I want good cooling. Summer time we get temps of about 35-40 degrees celsius I have no Air con, so a Case with good cooling is something I need.

What kind of temps do you get where you live?

I'm in the Navy, so I'm all over the place. I'm in Florida right now, but I have A/C. But, usually I'm in hot areas without A/C. Ambient is probably 40. I get decent cooling even with 4.5ghz overclock.

You're swaying me over to the Stormtrooper man, going to think about it some more.

So you think go with the windowed panel?

Got one other question about the Stormtrooper - how strong are the 3.5 inch plastic drive holders? Are they easy to break? I've read they are quite flimsy?

Anyone else got an opinion on these Cases?

Can the Stormtrooper fit a full sized E-ATX board? I assume it doesn't as the R4E and those type of boards aren't really that much wider than regular ATX. btw does ATX and E-ATX have the same mounting holes?
