PCIe x1 in x16

If I stick a PCIe x1 Firewire card into the second slot of a PCIe channel (with the first populated with a GTS 8800 graphics card), will I see a large performance drop?

The board is an Asus P9X79 WS

to the extent of my knowledge, you wouldnt be able to use an X1 card. if you are able to i wouldnt put it in the second slot, i would put it in one of the white slots. you wouldnt see a performance drop because your motherboard is able to support up to X32 in bandwidth, so an X1 and a X16 wouldnt do anything performance wise

What do you mean white slot?

There's no telling if your board will let you do something like that (at least not from me, someone else might know though), but there's plenty of bandwidth available so the performance impact would probably be 0.

On a side note with PCI-Express; if the card, physically fits an a slot. It will work (assuming the board allows it). PCI-Express of any width, is compatible electrically with PCI-Express of ANY slot, revision, anything. The only difference is on mobile versions, IIRC.
