Red LED on my CM Realpower M620

Thread Starter
I just picked up my brand new MSI 7870 hawk today (at a nice discount I might add)
I installed it and fired up furmark for a stress test, after about a minute my pc just shuts down. I have a look behind the case at the PSU and the red LED at the back is lit up. PC won't turn on anymore either. So I take it reinstalling my old card won't fix the problem?
I'm wondering, what is the chance it took out other components as well when it went? I'm on a 775 system, if it took out the mobo I'll have to replace a lot more than a PSU.

Also right now I'm looking at the Corsair GS800w or Professional Series HX750w
Any suggestions?

I recommend at least trying the old card (which I see is a 6870).  Although, I don't know what the red LED on the PSU indicates...

If the PSU died somehow, then know that it is possible that something else was taken down with it.  However, it's not a guarantee either that the PSU took something down with it.

If you get a new PSU, then know too that even a quality PSU that has a capacity of 400-450W would be plenty of power.  AMD recommends a 500W to power a system that has one 7870 in it, but that's taking into account the possibility of an ownership or purchase of a generic PSU.  Many generic 500W PSUs have a +12V capacity of maybe 350W to 400W which is about the +12V capacity of most quality PSUs that have a total rated capacity of 400-450W.

So, try the 6870 and then we'll go from there.

I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but when my PSU went a few weeks ago it took my mobo with it. I was also rockin' an LGA775 mobo therefore I took the opportunity to upgrade a few things. I recommend grabbing a new PSU first to see if the mobo did survive. Move forward after that.

Oh, ok.  :)

It would actually be better to make a new post with the results so that we don't have to keep refreshing.

Furmark extreme burn mode ran for 10 minutes without a hitch.
with the 7870 I had a shutdown after about 30 seconds or a minute.

Also I've heard the msi 7870 hawk version draws more power than a reference 7870.

Well, I should say that Furmark does put an unrealistically high load on GPUs that will never be seen in even the most demanding video games, so what I want to recommend for now is to just try the 7870 for all of the things you do with your computer.  If it fails again, then that would be a sure sign that it's time for a new PSU.  This way you might be able to avoid spending extra money.

Guru3D.com used to use Furmark, but they don't anymore.  Here's what they have to say about it:

Quote:
Note: there has been a much discussion using FurMark as a stress test to measure power load.  Furmark is so hard on the GPU that it does not represent an objective power draw compared to really hefty gaming.  If we measure the power consumption using a very-harsh-on-the-GPU gaming title and then compare the power consumption with Furmark, it can be 50 to 100W higher on a high-end graphics card solely because of FurMark.

We decided to move away from Furmark in early 2011 and are now using a game-like application which stresses the GPU 100% yet is much more representable of power consumption and heat levels coming from the GPU.  However, we are not disclosing which application that is because we do not want AMD/ATI/NVIDIA to 'optimize & monitor' our stress test whatsoever (for our objective reasons of course).

I'll give Bad Company 2 a go then (No don't have bf3 yet tongue.gif ) with the 7870.

I've been meaning to upgrade my psu for a while though. This coolermaster is...funny.
usually it works fine, but at the first boot of the day when I turn my pc on, it will start up for a second or two. Then fall completely silent again for a second or two and then it boots up normally. I've tolerated it because it always worked normally the rest of the day, but it shouldn't be doing that. So have been meaning to get a new one for ages.
