You might be buying the wrong model of drive. WD Blacks (for example) generally have aggressive (and noisy) seeking. They prioritize reliable access times over some clunking and clatter.
You might be interested in the new WD Blues, which are supposed to be quite quiet. Look into the WD10EZEX if you get a new drive any time soon.

That's exactly what mine do. You can actually feel the computer desk vibrating.
I've never put Samsung drives in my own builds for exactly that reason. Every one that I've tested makes strange humming noises. The new Seagates seem to be the same way...
