Well looks like my CaseLabs purchase will be pushed back to Jan. My HDTV is on a no interest deal until Jan, so it would be smarter to pay that off first.

Some thoughts on the above posts:

1. The whole point of reversing the mobo wall side is so you can have the window on any side of the case.

2. I think that a 60mm rad with 120mm fans in push pull is about as high as a PSU standing on a typical PSU bracket BTW. I remember that from a Time To Live Customs video review. Or at least close enough with the nearby border space to work. The question is how many flex bays will you have to give up by using a 480 in one of those locations.

3. On chopping the extended top: For one, I believe that is a welded part, so how are you going to brace the "Box" shape for accurate cutting? Even if you were a modder, I think it would be far easier to fabricate your own out of flat sheets of metal. Then after cutting them right, you could join them somehow. Bending metal might not be that easy if not impossible with normal tools, you might want to use acrylic as you can bend that material with a high power heat gun. Second, if you lop of the bottom of the extended top, you lop off the attachment area, not sure if it uses clips or screws though.

That is a good question, is the extended top attached via screws or clips, and is the pedestal attached via screws? I can't imagine clips being strong enough for a weight bearing pedestal, but clips might be used for the extended top. But I would much rather screws over clips for strength and durability for these parts as they are part of the frame in a way - as in they add significant height to the frame, so it should be solid feeling, like a part of the case.

Now that I've been thinking about it, wondering if SM8 or SMH10 the better route to go. Gets down to what kind of motherboard I might have in the future and the SM8 would be more limited in that respect since the SMH10 is XL-ATX. Hmmm.
The SM8 I know I would want a pedestal, the SMH10 w/o pedestal and top should be plenty, I'm thinking. Wonder if a top on the SMH10 would take 2 rads side-by-side?
Seems like the more I look the more questions I have about what will fit in which case and the actual final price with either would be about the same when a pedestal is added to the SM8.
This is different from buying a sub-$200 case where I know I'm going to have to mod something .Decisions, decisions.

How do you guys see the options for radiators in SM8 vs SMH10? I'm trying to get a handle on all this modularity and the best way to stick in plenty of radiators and pumps. Overkill R Us. thumb.gif
Plus is the SMH10 fully reversible?

Honestly are you ever going to go bigger than EATX? Most don't. And most EATX boards are not full size EATX even.

As far as rad size, they are both nice. The SMH10 / STH10 are like a Merlin with built in pedestals, but deeper for the larger mobos. Personally I feel this just adds unneeded bulk. I'd rather add 2 pedestals to a Merlin for a "Baby STH10".

True on the mobo. But what do you have with 2 pedestals added to the SM8, cost wise? That's a pretty significant boot in price. Just trying to figure out what is going to be the best balance between functionality and cost.
I do like the idea of the pedestals over a cavernous interior, though.
More pics with rads set up would help me decide. Guess I'll wait and see and keep looking at the accessories/prices and figure out what I want to do.

I'm going to do a Merlin SM8 with the extended top and the pedestal, that is not bad on price vs the STH10 and you can still do three or four 480 rads (depending on your exhaust plan and if you care to blow one rad into another or not), with room to spare for a 240 next to the PSU and a 240/360 in the Flex Bays.

Take a look thru this CaseLabs forum - there's plenty of builds, recent, too - that showcase the stuffings tongue.gif I think I'm out. My Azza will accomodate a SR-1 480 in pull only, and that's all I need for a single GPU/CPU loop. Have fun !

Tho I could still be persuaded to buy the SM8 IF it were to have the 64mm top available ;-)

I think you've read my mind mandrix. In my own personal opinion for the radiators I'd like to use it seems like I would need to add a pedestal. Personally I prefer the looks of the clean SMH10 without anything added to it as opposed to the SM8 with a pedestal. Judging from the pictures it looks like the SMH10 is more or less the SM8 with the pedestal. Has anyone mounted an E-ATX board in the SMH10? I suppose you could but the back plate is much wider, it might look funny. I think if I could combine them together somehow, I would want the SM8 with the pedestal integrated how it is on the SMH10 only I'd still keep the psu mounting where it is now

The Merlin chassis has been designed completely symmetrical so it can be reversed without the need of any replacement parts. Along with being able to reverse the case, the doors can also be swap from left to right simply by swapping door hinges between the two doors

These pics will most likely be move to the first post, but this a what a reverse SM8 looks like. Only a little Photoshopped I promise. tongue.gif
