wanted to find the cheapest laptop i could to play games on medium to high and so I came across this do you guys think its good?

barebone: msi ge600

http://www.cometsupply.com/mp/MSI/pm/MSI167532001/r/gg/ $258

CPU: i3-330m

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116463 $35

ram : corsair 8gb 1333

http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-1333mhz-PC3-10666-204-pin-CMSO8GX3M2A1333C9/dp/B002YUF8ZG/ref=sr_1_26?m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1345090237&sr=1-26 $40

i will use the ssd in my current laptop {vertex 3} as a boot drive. Total: $333! thumb.gif

also this laptops graphics card can be upgraded because it uses an mxm slot

the hd 5730m in the laptop performs like a 6650m

it has a dedicated button for graphic switching so no graphics issues and a subwoofer

I say just go for something like an older model laptop like a G53 or something to that area. Anything with a GTX 460M and an i5 will handle most games on medium/high settings at 1600x900.

I would honestly suggest staying away from upgrading that barebones machine if at all possible due to the lack of a warranty AND the fact that laptop GPUs are EXPENSIVE. My old 6970M sold for $300 and te new 7970M I bought for almost $700 including shipping. eek.gif So... buy a complete machine if at all possible, don't build up from the ground. Not worth it.

Here's one for $700 outright: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Asus-Notebook-G53SW-A1-15-6inch-Intel-Core-i7-2630QM-750GB-8GB-GTX-460M-DVDRW-/110947969818?pt=Laptops_Nov05&hash=item19d503ab1a

because of heat i wouldnt get a laptop for gaming, even with 100 fans. to be honest my 650m could barely do med 60 fps every game at 1920x1080 with an ivy bridge 2.3 ghz 261qm or something. It runs hot at 94c. Lol. XD

the only thing i would be kinda worried about would be the heat and the power it would take

The 5870M outperforms the 460M but only by a smidge and the 460M draws lower power as well. It's been known to overclock better too. I had mine at 800/1600/3200 for a while and I was well beyond where a 5770 was normally at. smile.gif

I would honestly go for the machine I posted for two reasons. One, the G53 has incredible cooling power, able to keep the 460M nice and chilly (figuratively speaking of course). Two, the 2630QM is well beyond anything from the first generation i7 line of laptop CPUs. It's even faster compared to my 920XM at stock, and my CPU is the previous Extreme model!

For $700, you can't find a better deal. Trust me on this. I had the 460M. I know what it's capable of and I had a bad GPU too. Overclocks were mostly unstable so I had to reduce it later on. tongue.gif But then again, my ASIC reading was at 74.9%, which is pretty bad. Most of them read around 85% and essentially it translates into how well they will overclock, since the GPU can't be overvolted. tongue.gif

So, I would go for the G53. You'll enjoy it more. It's got a 1080p screen too btw. biggrin.gif

lmglidinhere i would gladly chose the g53 over the barebone i mentioned but my goal is to find the absolute cheapest laptop for gaming. even if i got the barebone i wouldnt upgrade to th 5870m until around Christmas.

id be satisfied with the hd 5730m for the time being if it could handle bf3 decently on medium at 768p

im kind of an in between becuase i dont want to max out games like on my desktop but still want atleast medium low seem unacceptable

heres a video of bf3 on the 5730m hoping to get similar performance:

I'd still go for the G53. That machine alone will manage twice as well as the one you want to get.

You'll be able to manage like... medium low settings in DX10 mode. My 6970M can manage medium settings via DX11 but only just. Not to mention that the i3 doesn't have any turbo boost options either, so you get a 2.13GHz dual core. >_> But it's up to you and I wouldn't go with a 5870M in any regard. It's a 75w TDP vs the 460M's 50w TDP. Both of which are fairly large bumps over the 5730's TDP of like... 30w. >_>

EDIT: I'd like to note that the Power Adapter is only 90w and the GPU socket doesn't offer powerful enough cooling for a 5870M You need more than just a GPU core contact plate to cool one effectively.

I'm against this idea of yours because I've seen people waste their money trying to do it and end up spending around a thousand for a machine that wouldn't EVER resell for half of that.
