explaining a PSU

Thread Starter
hey everyone

very simple question here -

a PSU offers lots of connection cables (like a TON) that are labelled P1, P2, P3 etc etc right? and some are shared on the same cables like it'll branch off into P8 and P9 (for example). my question is, are all of these connectors the same power-wise?

When plugging it into your HDD or cd drive to power it, does it matter which P1/P2/P3/P4 etc you use? Do they all supply the same amount of power?

Also, as mentioned that they branch off into two ends -- what's the point of that? just to be more organized? Or are you supposed to have some computer parts connected to the same branch of PSU cords? i.e. i currently have my HDD and my CDDRRIVE connected via the same power cables.

It doesn't matter what you use as they are all in series, so all the power plugs give the same power no matter where it is on its length. If they have the same pin connects, they are the same power.

My power supply has 8 SATA and 8 Molex power plugs, 4 6+2 pin, 20+4 pin, 4+4 EPS, and a single 4-pin floppy.

All the SATA deliver 12 and 5v and a ground to all the drives plugged in, and will them give the power they need.

Molex will power whatever you want off of them as long as you have an adpater

etc etc etc

By spec, each plug type is suppose to deliver the same power as those that are like  it.

You must be using an old power supply with labels like p1 p2 p3 are how they used to label them they dont really do that anymore.

Yeah it doesn't really matter. Sata power is sata power. Molex is a molex.

im using antec vp350 -- its not that old is it?

even so, in the future when i get a psu, the same rules apply right? just connect them via SATA/molex and i'll have power yes? without any specific pattern of connections

If it fits it's ok, even in the case of a 8pin mobo connector and a 8pin graphics card connector they look identical but unless defective they will not go in the wrong place without forcing them. As far as all the other cables they do not look alike besides I doubt a 350 PSU has a 8pin video card plug and maybe not even a 8pin mobo plug but it may have the later.

Anyways if it fits you are ok
