Help - Came Home and PC was Down

Hey guys,

So I get back from a 13 hour work day and I see that my computer is turned off, which I generally just leave on 24/7. I try and hit the power button and nothing turns turns on, no fans spins, nada. My current set up is my sig rig. I'm not sure which component is causing the issue. My wife said the computer was on and running about 3 hours before I got home.

I can see that my USB ports on my case are getting power because if I plug in some peripherals, the LED lights on them light up. I Don't know how to test a power supply but I'd assume that since I'm getting power elsewhere on the system that the PSU isn't the issue. I would assume that the whole motherboard isn't bad either since my case USB ports which are attached to the motherboard are getting power as well. I don't know if there's a hidden start button on my motherboard that I can try instead of the one that's attached to my case.

Motherboard: Gigabye 990FXA-UD5
PSU: Kingwin Lazer Gold 1000W
Processor: AMD 1090T
GPU: Sapphire 7970

Any ideas to help me troubleshoot or narrow down what the issue might be would be greatly appreciated.

Things I've tried:

1. flipping the switch back and forth on PSU
2. taking out motherboard battery
3. checking the power connector pins from case to motherboard

I now just heard a huge POP noise from my system and I have no clue what it came from. It was almost as loud as a balloon popping. I'm thinking it might actually be the powersupply. I couldn't think of anything else that could make that kind of noise. I think I do smell something from the PSU as well which I shouldn't if it hasn't even been on as well right?

Here's a couple pictures. I didn't want to take the top casing off because of the warranty. Has anyone ever used a Kingwin warranty before? I bought this PSU based on the PSU recommendation guide. I've had it just over a year.

I wouldn't power on the system using that PSU , not yet at least.

Think maybe you could get your hands on a spare PSU to test the system out with?

From my limited knowledge, it definitely sounds like a PSU issue

I don't have another PSU available to test the system. Is there a way of testing a PSU without any fancy tools?

Well you can see if the PSU will turn on by grapping a non coated paper clip or bare metal wire and jumping the green wire on the 24 pin connection to a black wire.

Thanks for the trick. I knew I heard of someway to do it but I couldn't for the life of me remember. I tried that and I heard the PSU click like it was trying to turn on but nothing happened so it's definitely the PSU.

Since I no longer have a need for PSU to run multiple GPU's at the moment, what might you guys recommend for a new one? I'm thinking a 650 or 750W Corsair or Seasonic would allow me to have room for upgrades and another GPU if I decided to go back that route in the future.

im running a pair of 6850s on OC in CFX and a 2500K @ 4.8 on a corsair GS700 unit, ive had no issues what so ever.

what you have right now could easily run off it.

if you wantupgradeability for the future, grab an AX850 unit.
