Building a Laptop (?)

Thread Starter
Thank you for viewing my thread. For someone of moderate experience building computers (a couple of desktops), how practical and/or possible is building a laptop? Also, where can I find barebones kits? Should I go with an AMD or Intel setup? Is there anything I need to know before going forward?
Thanks a lot,
Ben

Firs of welcome in our comunity. You even filled your sys specs most don't.

As for your question I'll give you a straight answear: it's hard, very hard.
I have build a couple of desktops myself, but when I opened (not build) my first laptop I was amased. All the pieces are so tightly crowded that I think they must have designed even the sata ribbons to fit.

The main things you would need for a laptop would be:
- a frame, iron/Al frame on which to place all of the other components. On the bottom part of the frame the mobo should be placed. This frame should be of rectangular shape, as the cmponents that sit above the mobo must be fixed
- after you managed to build a frame and bought all the parts you need (mobo, CPU, ets) you can place them on the frame and start thinking at the cooling system. It has to cool the CPU and also to create somekind of an air current in the case that cools the other cmponents (NB, SB). You have to be creative on this one... I suppose the OTES systems can be a good inspiration
- a lot of luck

As long as you have a barebone you should do fine. It will take considerably longer but you will be satisfied.

look in places like this also
http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/

just remember unless your building a custom housing(case) youll need to get the right match hence why a barebones is easier because they design the mobos and cases to fit together so compatibility can be a issue on components

i took apart my old laptop cuz i was bored expecting to put it back together but once i got the mobo out and all the wires i couldnt get it back in so i dunno how hard it would be to build one from scratch, also there are like 10 layers to a screen. i dont know if you would get one assembled but if you have t put one together GOOD LUCK!

First of all, thanks for posting to my thread. A while ago I saw a laptop mobo in PcFormat magazine that can support a non-integrated graphics card. Anybody know of any developments in that field or if there are others like it?
