I can't quite grasp this. You are switching on your rig with a bare CPU and only then applying TIM and mounting a heatsink? And then it works, but if you mount the heatsink first then it doesn't? Is some part of the heatsink mounting shorting out something on the motherboard? You don't list any components in your sig, what MB (edit: well obviously the Z77E-ITX) and what HSF do you have?

Asus h77 board: Boots with both g620 and 3470
z77e-itx: only boots the g620

It's possible it's not booting without any fan connected to the CPU fan header. I know our BIOS doesn't have that option, but other boards won't allow a boot without a fan on the CPU fan header.

I use a H50, I've since gotten it to boot reliably regardless of whether or not it has a heat sink.

It's not an electrical issue as the fan header was never used during this.

I'm thinking something got into the socket and was shorting out when the H50 pressed down on it.

For the record, an IB quad can run without heatsinking and not be destroyed.

Oops. I guess I should have figured "fixed" voltage means it doesn't drop along with multi with Speedstep and such on. It worked that way on older platforms but that's when there was no "offset" option or Turbo, of course.

Yes, I bought new... and I'm so sad.. I just arrived home and there is some glue or some sticky crap on back of motherboard... i will return it so fast.. And this is one of the largest e-shops with IT/electronic in czech republic..
