Best 1000$ Ultrabook for University

Thread Starter
I am looking into buying a new laptop and I think I've decided that I want to buy an ultrabook. The requirements for my computer are as follows:

- ~13 inch reasonably good resolution screen
- 4GB+ of DDR3 Ram
- Core i5 or higher processor
- An SSD (I don't care how much storage I have because I don't need much)
- A very good battery life (I'm talking 7 hours or more)

If any of this is unreasonable I can change my requirements to meet the constraints of the current market. I'm a computer engineering student so I need a powerful, light laptop with good battery life. I've been looking into the Asus Zenbook series however I was wondering what else was out there!

Well, the new Lenovo T430 is quite a catch. With the 9 cell (+50$) battery you can surf the web through WiFi for 13 hours according to benchmarks!
With I5-3210M and good 900p screen it will cost something like 850$ I think. You can add some SSD maybe, although I'm pretty sure it's overpriced so you better install your own.

That isn't an ultrabook though. It's not light enough for my needs

Macbook Air is worth considering because:

A. Apple offers educational discounts.

B. You could buy a refurbished MBA from last year and still get the 1 year warranty from Apple.

C. The 1440x900 screen is better than most on the market.

The Zenbook Prime UX31A is also a very good buy. Battery life likely will not be 7 hours on any laptop unless you have a slice battery a la Lenovo and/or you turn your brightness to the minimum and turn off your wireless radio and don't do anything intensive on it.

I'm studying engineering and some of the software that I need wouldn't easily run on a Mac. I'm looking more at pcs than macs for a few reasons (one of which is that I don't like apple computers...). The Zenbook ux31a looks good though. You think it's worth the extra money to buy the Zenbook prime with ivy bridge (as opposed to the regular Zenbook)? Or maybe look into Samsung series 5/9 laptops?

My mom has a ux31a. 1920x1080 res is plus for sure and the design is sleek. I personally want a Samsung s9 ivy but I'm still waiting to see what hybrid tablet ultrabooks are released with w8. On ultrabooknees I saw a Fujitsu ubook that doubled as a tablet. Meaning a tablet with i5/ssd specs?

Ivy does worth it as it lowers the power consumption over SB - if battery life is your goal, then go for it.

If that is the case, do you guys think that this laptop would be the best bet for me?

http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=72592&vpn=UX31A-DB51&manufacture=ASUS&promoid=1084

Will there be other big changes in ultrabooks in the near future that I should be waiting for?
