Why an ips screen? Isn't it mostly for viewing angles?
I agree the mobo is overpriced but if the features it has works, i think it seems alright. I will look at the suggested mobos after work.
Thanks for the tips on ram and hdd. I'll modify those items later.
Why switch the crucial? I thought that was a good product and seemed to have good reviews on newegg.
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2

Well the IPS screen is mainly because it is 1440p much more pixels than 1080p.
Asrock mobos are great and very good overclockers, you will not be disappointed.
The samsung 830 and Crucial m4 are both great drives to grab, the samsung is a little faster and just as reliable. thumb.gif

My list was more a quick throw together starting point from new egg. I've researched ips a bit and I like it. The Ssd decision will probably go to samsung. I'll update my list by tomorrow

I just decided to go dual using my 23 inch Acer pos with a second eips, but that because my budget was under 300 and the new asus eips is amazing for the price range.(asus vg23ah)

Case: Corsair obsidian 800d. $ 275
So many great full cases in the sub $200 range to choose from. Unless you have one of those "unlimited" budget sort of builds, you should focus on more value in this department. The Rosewill Thor comes to mind. (easily one of the best sub $200 cases, and is often available in combo specials with hard drives or nice PSUs). Has lots of grommeted holes for cables/water/etc.
Quote:
Mobo: Asus sabertooth Z77. $ 240
Fancy $200+ MOBOs will typically buy you a few percent better OC at best. If tweaking for fun is part of the plan, go for it. If you think it's just going to be a fad, your long term needs will be better served (value wise) by a more modest sub $200 board.
Quote:
Ssd: Crucial m4 128GB. $ 110
With this budget, I'd suggest going for a 256Gb size Sammy 830. They have faster write speeds and enough space for OS and LOTS of apps and stuff. Many people can actually live out of these drives almost exclusively.
Quote:
Hdd: WD caviar black 1TB. $ 110
The latest Caviar Blue 1TB single-platter drive is cheaper at the egg right now ($85), and is typically faster, quieter, uses less power, etc. (model : WD10EZEX)
Quote:
Ram: (2) G.Skill sniper 8GB (2x4) $ 120
A 2x8GB kit will be easier to OC, and leave slots open, as others have said. The memory controller on an 1155 CPU is dual channel, so there's no performance gain in stuffing all 4 slots. For an OCing "tinkering" machine, I suggest a 1.35V kit, like the Mushkin, for ~$105 last I checked. A 1.35V kit has a lot more overclocking headroom, because they have a lot more voltage headroom to play in.
Quote:
Psu: Corsair hx750w. $ 145
Nothing wrong here, except, way more power than you need unless you intend to SLI and run a huge pile of HDs and stuff. For a non-SLI rig, you can go nuts OCing and still have lots of headroom on a nice ~550W job here. I wouldn't bother with anything over 650W. See Rosewill Capstone for high value well made 5 year warranty 80+ GOLD PSU options.

Done some research and revised my list in post 1.

Thoughts?

I'm not 100% on the case, I want to make a run to micro center and see them in person. I would like enough room for either an h100 or custom wc for cpu

I would grab a NZXT Switch over a Rosewill Thor, only slightly more expensive, but a much better case and this way you can splurge for a Rasa 360 kit

I like the case and wc suggestion. I'll go look at the case in a few days.

What is the differences in ram. I was looking for 16gb. And I figured 1866 would be better than 1600. Or am I misunderstanding something?

You normally don't need more than 8 for anything but heavy editing, The samsung ram can be overclocked very well. It should get up to 1866Mhz without an issue. Most are known to get up to 2000Mhz+ thumb.gif

I used to have 8 and it seemed to bog down a bit when multi taking (photo shop, Internet, cs:s) that's why I'd spend a bit extra for double the ram.

Why would I go for 1600 if I have to overclock to at least 1866 when I could just go for out of the box 1866? And wouldn't a higher starting speed mean I could overclock it more if I decide ide to oc ram?

I'm new to overclocking so I'd like to start with cpu and then go to gpu.

It's a more complicated issue that simply buying a bigger number. Some RAM modules are rated FAR MORE CONSERVATIVELY than others. Furthermore, overclocking RAM will often require a voltage increase. The lower the starting voltage, the more overhead you have to work with for voltage increases.

A well known "exploit" in memory OCing has been to buy lower voltage chips, and over-volt them a bit, the result is more OCing headroom for the money than chips that are "sold as" fast chips to begin with. Often the very fast kits are over-priced and actually don't have the overclocking ability that the less expensive low voltage kits have. The Samsung RAM that everyone is talking about, is BOTH low voltage, AND very conservatively rated, typically good for ~20-25% better speeds or 20-25% tighter timings than they are rated for at stock voltage. Run em at 1.5V and they can go even faster. There aren't any other sub-$50 2x4 kits that I am aware of that have so much out-of-box clocking headroom. If you must have the 16GB kit, the Mushkin 2x8GB 1866-11-11-11 1.35V kit is just $5 more than the 1.5V Ares kit and I have good reason to believe it would make a better OCing RAM set than the Ares.
