How long to run test leak on system?

Thread Starter
Hey guys wondering how long should I run a test leak on my system?

I right now have it installed, but using my secondary system to power the pump to check for leaks on my water cooling. I have the Thermaltake Big 760 Plus unit and so far I don't see a leak on it. I filled it up as the water was moving around and most of all the bubbles have gone by. I just not sure when to truly provide power to my system or what are the steps to take with a new water cooling install. Thanks In Advance!

I ran mine for 24 hours with the pumps at 100%. I also used canned air to blow around the fittings. I found a couple of small leaks doing that and I was able to address them before I put power to the components.

Whenever you're relatively sure that it won't leak you can go ahead and power it up. I usually run my loop for an hour before I feel comfortable powering up the rest of my system. But even then you still want to check your loop when your system is on. Heat can cause tubes to become more malleable and flex, causing a leak.

I think quite a few people will tell you ot run 24 hours. I had a small leak from a compression fitting on mine that showed up after about 6 hours of leak testing

I usually run it for a few hours-overnight, But I also leave paper towels rubber banded around the fittings for a few days after that. Just in case thumb.gif
post #8 of 48
How long are you comfortable with?

I run mine for an hour or two, but then I have built a few loops now and I am pretty confident in my work. I also gently tug on each bit of tubing and each fitting, as well as trying to rotate them slightly. I check for leaks with a bit of toilet paper; TP wrinkles when wet so it is obvious when you have a leak.

After a few hours, or however long it takes to tidy up and have a cup of tea, I will fire the system up and run some stress tests. I often unplug the fans at this point to heat the coolant a bit more, and I keep an eye on things as the heat builds up.

Thanks guys for all the tips. Man that is scary to run it hot like that just to see if it leaks. lol, I am nervous just at the though I even went watercooling. I am so all about air cooling is not even funny. biggrin.gif This is my first attemp and makes my heart beat hard just the though of a leak. XD

about 1hr or so into the test and no sign of leak with the pump running max.
