Did HIGH temps for a month damage my CPU?

Thread Starter
I went away to Paris this summer for a month and a half, when i got back my CPU temps were 72c. I asked my roommate how long it's been like this he replied "About 1 week after you went away". So my CPU sat at 72c and higher for almost 1 and a half months. I purchased a new motherboard and also upgraded my CPU cooling. I now idle at 37c, however i notice that my computer lately seems to run slow. Dramatic decrease in how fast applications open and load. In addition, my FPS in WoW is way down and watching movies on VLC I'll encounter lag spikes. I never had these problems before, but even before i went away i was barley using my rig, so the problems may have been happeing before i went away (unlikely). However, i now find that my GPU temp is around 53c idle and 64c while on WoW. Is my problem rather a GPU issue or is my CPU damaged for being so hot for an extended period of time? What do you think?

Well I don't think the temps are a problem at all, my 5850 frequently hits 75C, graphics cards are made to go quite a bit higher though (under 85-90C is a good guideline when overclocking) . I would at least go through some of the simpler steps first to rule out some stuff before you drop more money on a replacement CPU. Update drivers, make sure background processes aren't using up the cpu, things along those lines.

The reading on AMD CPUs is TCASE, actual silicon temps would be much higher. Regarding the GPU, 64C in game is no problem at all.

A damaged CPU isn't likely to just slow down, it will not work, or produce instability.

Did you reinstall Windows when you got the new board? Have you checked to see if the CPU is throttling?

Sounds like you need to clean the heat sink and reapply some thermal compound to me. As motherboards will turn off the pc if it gets too hot these days. Unless you had cut all of that off and left it to run. I still say just clean it up and apply new thermal compound. What was your computer doing that your roommate would just leave your pc on for anyway? Thanks

I tried that but the water cooler i had originally was on it's way out acting sporadic. The new cooler works like a charm temps are perfect right now. I let my roommate use my PC when im not home, he usually just plays games. It was running 72C at idle, so god knows what it was running at in games!!!

Hahaha, not sure about load he said he didn't look, or for that manner even know what the little number in the bottom right corner of the screen was. When i saw it at 72c I shut down right away, i don't even want to know load temps.
