General File Server/HTPC Interaction Questions

Thread Starter
So I am trying to decide how much power I need and server side and HTPC side. I plan to use Windows Media software to run the HTPC. I would like general media streaming (bluray movies and dvd audio) and web browsing to include nexflix etc. There will be minor gaming, but that isn't a huge deal.

1) With Windows Media streaming, is the media playing on the external server or the local HTPC?
2) If I remote desktop to my main rig and launch a game there, then is my HTPC being used at all beyond the bandwidth consumed? Lets say I'm running Witcher 2 maxed everything.
3) With this particular model, the HTPC shouldn't require much storage space over the OS and minor programs(30GB). Correct?
4) Is much RAM neccessary for something of this caliper (1/2/4/8GB...)?

Intended setup:
MITX MOBO
PCIE soundcard
Intel HD GFX 1155 Processor

I'll give this a try.

Pretty sure that the transcoding is being done on the server in this case, but is being played through the HTPC; so a little of both.

Most remote desktop capabilities would use the remote computer for processing power; but something to note is that there may be a significant reduction in picture quality. When I use a remote desktop at work, I'm limited to 16-bit color, even though my computer that I'm using is more than capable. There is also a significant lag.

Depends on what OS you're planning on running.

Again, depends on what OS you're planning on running. RAM is cheap enough that you might as well use at least 4GB (especially if you're using a 64bit OS.

To piggy back off of Liquidzoo

If streaming, the server is doing the processing yes.

As far as bandwidth usage, it depends on your home network. Is it wired or wireless? If wired is it 1000Mpbs, 100 or 10. If wireless is it a, b, g or N etc.. I use Remote Desktop here at work as well but it's full 32bit on our Win7 machines and exporting displays on Solaris is full 32 bit color. Your remote desktop is probably setup so you consume less network resources while its running i.e turning off visual styles.

Correct, but 30GBs is not that much for a Win7 load. I would get 60GB just to be safe.

Liquidzoo nailed it. RAM is so cheap right now 4GB would be the standard thought 8GB might be a little overkill. But as he already said RAM is cheap and the more the merrier!
