Tube Amp or Solid State Amp? - Page 2

I know you already have your answer, but night and day between the modded STX and an external amp via RCA. Its actually not a half bad source until you can get your hands on a better DAC.

I don't know what headphones you plan on running but a tube amp is more practical as a secondary imo. Plus I don't know how well those higher powered amps are gonna do if your running lower impedance headphones that are more sensitive.

The combination is more important than the reputation/price tag imo, some things just sorta sound like they were meant to be together tongue.gif

So, what do you recommend guys?
Lol, I'm gonna' say it and I know I'll be getting an IM shortly, but don't listen to the Audio Editor on this one.

The Schiit Bifrost is a very good DAC and every bit as much silent as the ODAC. Some even prefer it to the ODAC, but making the distinction isn't very easy.

Haven't touched most of their amps, but the Lyr sounded good for the brief time I heard it at a meet.

Can't go wrong with the Schiit Asgard + Bifrost.

It is my next purchase now that I have 8 pairs of headphones.

My Fiio E9 + E7 combo is due for an upgrade to something new and I loved the sound signature from the pair.

Do you suggest the WA2 (tube amp) for high impedance cans like Tesla T1?

Or can the Mjolnir drive the T1?

And do the RCA-out of the Essence get affected by those Dolby effects?

Dunno', never heard it. I know a lot of people match up the WA2 with the T1 though. I always thought the amp designed for the T1 should be the best amp but idk lol!

Lyr is pretty solid, but I wouldn't choose it as a primary amp. I personally only use headphones with my computer. 80% of the time im using either the low or high impedance output from the d100 dac (depends on which headphones im using). When im in a music phase ill either crank up the lyr or the m-stage based on which headphones im using. I absolutely love the lyr with my AKG's and these tubes (http://www.tubemonger.com/Matsu****a_Japan_6922_E88CC_Mullard_Tooling_NOS_p/591.htm). It warms up the AKGs like perfectly and the clarity is there through all of the ranges.

I use the m-stage mainly for music on any lower impedance headphones like the m50s. Dont really use the amps for gaming... just what the dac can offer.

I think the WA2 or the Mjolnir would both have more than enough power for the T1s.

Also the Dolby effects can be turned on, but I run it with the card set to 44.1khz, 2 channel, and leave all of the dolby effects off. They will work with any of the analog outputs for sure.

Since you have a DAC connected from your sound card. Is there any difference if you plug your audio rig without the DAC?

Edit: Well, nevermind.

The Lyr is better for Ortho's only. I like the Asgard sound better for anything else. I use the Asgard with HE-500's and it sounds great. A DAC's job should just be to convert the audio without adding any noise. People will swear by $1000 DAC's and $2000 amps but you're much better off buying the Asgard/BiFrost or just sticking with the Essence DAC so you can take advantage of it's Dolby effects. If I didn't have a Realiser, that's what I would be doing.
