Building a Gaming PC for a friend with a $3500 budget - Page 7

Everything's looking much better now. But........

If he's getting two 680's it would be crime to get that monitor! It's making me cry just thinking about it.

Also it doesn't really matter if you get one 690 or two 680's. The only thing I would be sure to do is make sure you get the 4GB model. 2GB is currently unlikely to be an issue but I presume hes wanting this to at least see him through a year or twos gaming. Games are pushing vram more and more (2GB is currently ok but for how long no one knows). Not gonna be an issue at 1080p but with this hardware you want at least a 27" 1440p monitor or there's no point getting two 680's!

A single 680 is plenty for even 1440p or even a 1600p monitor for current games. You only need 2 680s to drive a surround setup at max settings.

I feel your answer is incomplete. That may be the case for current games (which it isn't depending on what you consider to be "plenty") but if he's got the money and clearly wants to spend it making the best gaming machine he can there's no harm in making it as good as it possibly can be for current games and "FUTURE" games. Do you know what the requirements of games over the next year or two are going to be?

As for your statement about one 680 been enough. Generally yes it is but if you are wanting to build a rig that can manage a min of 60fps at all times on the highest settings possible at 1440p or 1600p then no, one 680 is not enough. Not even close!

As an example below is a HardCorps review on the 680 with max detail at 1600p. Many games struggle with min frame rate and can't even average 60fps at that res and detail. What do you think will happen to games like Skyrim once you start modding it (if you do that is). Whether you mod or not is beside the point. At these resolutions one 680 is not enough to truly max a game. As I said before, Its not even close. These are just current games. Future games are only going to get more demanding.

All in all though one 680 is enough for an excellent gaming experience, with current games, at 1440p. But is a quite a way off from maxing every game and maintaining 60fps at all times.

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/04/10/sapphire_hd_7970_oc_edition_video_card_review/7
(Can't find one for 1440p but I cant imagine a 30fps increase in min frame rates by dropping from 1600p to 1440p)

Sorry if I come across as a bit of an arse but I just don't see why people see the need to spread ill informed or partial information around. Its not really helping anyone.

okay, modern games except for BF3 and Witcher. Those will be the only games that will have an issue with it. Almost every other game will be fine with a single GTX 680. Most people will not notice a difference. between 40 FPS and 60 FPS, but they will normally notice a large drop from say 80 FPS to 40 FPS, which you will see a lot in fps's like BF3 due to the explosions and gunfire.

Way too high of a budget... no need... just simply no need...

My computer can max any game at 50-60 FPS @ 1920x1080 expect for BF3 which plays amazing on high settings... I can only imagine the FPS this beast will produce... but honestly... how do you have 3.5k to throw around? Share you secrets... Please!!

I'm not sure if that doh.gif was aimed at me or yourself as you don't seem to disagree with what I have put but whatever. I'm not here to get in a slagging match and don't like doing so.

The info is there so hopefully OP can make an informed decision.

One 680 is an excellent choice for most people and will provide an excellent gaming experience but there are still improvements by adding another. However it is an exceptionally small again for a high price which to most people with more sense than money, is not worth it.

Seriously? I know OCN is full of opinion about PCs and the like but questioning people about their money and how they spend it is way to much. I was going to be harsher but I dont want people to get butt hurt.

There is afew games that use 95% of 2 Overclocked 680s just to hold 60fps.

If u ever plan on running maxxed out High Res textures etc u need 2 of them..

But for me anything below 60fps is Fail so... yah..
