My dad gave me his computer telling me it keeps freezing. I run a chkdsk and an sfc in safe mode with command prompt and both came back with errors but could not fix it. Since chkdsk came back i thought i will clone the disk to a different drive and put it back in and work from there. I can take an image with driveimage xml but it refuses to boot. When i tried to clone it every entry said WARNING! BAD SECTOR so it wouldnt clone. oh and did i mention that this is a windows xp computer.
This is where it gets weird. I go into bios to try a few things, and bios freezes and locks up multiple times. Now im thinking memory. One of the sticks was ridiculously dirty so i remove it leaving only 1 stick. I try both sticks in either slot multiple times and it still freezes. Memory usually doesnt break together at the same time. And besides, nothing will run without at least one stick. Then im thinking motherboard but it simply freezes or reboots, and does not just shutdown.
I then went about to try to just say screw it and with a new hdd, just clean install windows 7 64 bit. it gets to the last step in the installation and then goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor. This is what is weird to me because in my own computer i used the same hdd to boot the same copy of windows on a clean install and it loads all the way up into windows.
So i once again think its a hardware problem in my dads computer. but since nothing is following the signs of complete failure i have no idea what it could be. Im going to swap out the psu for another tonight that i have lying around to make sure but i dont see signs of psu failure.
Can anyone help me with this? It's driving me insane!
