As far as I have read Intel have not changed it. They do not design cpus for overclocking and it works great out of the box on stock clocks. They ENABLE people to overclock, they don't design them for it.

I agree with the article. You will usually hit a voltage/overclock wall around 4.7-4.9 GHz that will stop you, even if your temps are good. So doing this is kinda pointless.

I have read that the benefit past 4.5GHz offers even less added performance by this website link, but want to confirm it. If you are ever unlucky enough as the person in that video (30C difference between cores), then yes by all means replace the TIM under the IHS!

^Anything past 4.5ghz would be a linear performance gain (really depends on how the application reacts to clocks), but it's already so fast at 4.5ghz, that you wouldn't really see a difference unless you're into benching, folding, encoding, etc.

I think many IB chips can easily hit 4.7~5ghz given that you are running on water or better. A lot of them can hit 4.2~4.5ghz on stock voltage alone, so despite the higher core temps, the end-user is still experiencing similar clocks with SB due to the lower wattage/power output.

Current 3570K vs my old 2550K: (Asrock Z77E-ITX vs Asrock P67 Extreme4 Gen3)

3570K - 4.5ghz @ 1.16v - idle: 35~42C load: 55~65C (Summer ambient)
2550K - 4.5ghz @ 1.35v - idle : 30~38C load: 50~58C (Winter ambient)

3570K - 4.7ghz @ 1.264v - idle: 40~48 load: 65~74C (Summer)
2550K - 4.8ghz @ 1.4v - idle: 33~40C load: 60~70C (Winter)

I was actually able to boot my 3570K at 5ghz, but it took over 1.4v (a lot higher than the stock 1v) and I wasn't really happy with that, when my 2550K did 5ghz stable at 1.47v (not much higher than the stock 1.3v).

That's hard to say... I've only been overclocking for 3+ years and I have yet to have a component die on me (except a motherboard but that was due to overkill voltage). I would say 1.25~1.3v is a good safe voltage, given that you're not hitting 85~90C.

I'd try to stay under 1.35v. Honestly nobody really knows what safe yet.... I couldn't get any more gains over 1.32v so that's as high as I went.

A 1.35 Vcore seems like a comfortable maximum, unless I'm lucky enough to get a golden chip that can push past 5GHz! I have an enormous cooling capacity for my i7 3770K, full coverage MB blocks and two GK110's, two SR1 560's! biggrin.gif
