$500 build

Hey guys. My cousin wants a new computer and has $500. He needs a monitor and tower. He has a mouse, keyboard and speakers.

This is not a gaming build. He will only use it to check email, browse the web, go on youtube and use Microsoft office (word, excel, power point etc). He does not have a copy of windows.

Also, he will be moving in three weeks to the east coast because he's in the military. So the parts will have to come from a fry's electronics. I will be the one going with him to buy the parts and will be helping him build it.

He was just going to buy a pre built computer from Walmart/best buy but I told him I would help him build something better. So, is it doable with all those requirements and such a lower dollar amount? All advice will be greatly appreciated it. Thanks in advance!

I am going to round up the prices because if you try to buy this in store, I am sure that tax will bring the price up a bit and hopefully by rounding up I will compensate.

CPU: http://www.frys.com/product/6787385#specs $60

Mobo: http://www.frys.com/product/7014691?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG $70

RAM: http://www.frys.com/product/6906857?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG $40

Case: http://www.frys.com/product/6348461?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG $60

PSU: http://www.frys.com/product/6893426?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG $40

SSD: http://www.frys.com/product/6728115?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG $90

I would just keep this build a SSD only build considering he won't be using this PC to the point of storing massive amounts of data on it.

I would also try to run linux. If he is only going to do light computing and no gaming, then linux will prevent him from getting any viruses, and it should be a much more stable system if you use either linux mint or Ubuntu. Plus it is free and who doesn't like free?

Lastly, for the screen we broke the budget a little, but since some of the parts above have mail in rebates, you can offset the overage. http://www.frys.com/product/6895066?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

It is a 21.5 inch IPS monitor. It has very good picture quality, so if you friend wants to watch a movie or something, this would be the best screen for the job. If you can, I would say to order it from amazon because you would save about 15 bucks which would give you ample funds to add a dvd drive.

I think if you can get that screen for a bit cheaper, and get any dvd drive that makes you happy, you should be good to go. thumb.gif

Hey, thanks for the help everyone! Sorry for the delayed response. So my cousin wants to know how that build xnuw posted would be against this one that he is eyeing from best buy.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Dell+-+17%22+Optiplex+Desktop+Computer+-+2+GB+Memory+-+400+GB+Hard+Drive/5096221.p?id=1218611377907&skuId=5096221

We are just waiting to pull the trigger and head down to fry's and buy all the components.

Thanks again.

The builds here are more updated with up-to-date components.

You don't even know what PSU the Dell has
