Sport is defined as an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others.

Athlete is defined as a person who is proficient in sports and other forms of physical exercise.

Even moving your fingers is considered physical exertion (sport), therefore someone who is proficient in doing so would be considered an athlete. If you've never broken a sweat while competitively playing a video game, I'd like to know which games you've been playing.

My take? These guys are great at what they do, and they love doing it. I send serious props for them making some money and advancing their intelligence at the same time.

So wait, they're basement dwellers?

They get to go around the world and play in major tournaments for huge sums of cash against other very well trained teams. They have to practice, work out strategies, and keep themselves at the peak of their ability.

Doesn't sound like a basement dweller to me.

The butthurt is strong within you guys. thumb.gif

People get so offended when others speak up and say it how it is. Cry some more, they're not athletes, they aren't sports. Just because you get little sleep and you play StarCraft doesn't make you an athlete.

I'd like to see someone try to make a legitimate argument as to why these people are "athletes" in comparison to those who compete in real sports.

If someone has passion for it, no matter how impractical or pointless something may seem to you what does it matter? I've always thought it's better than being a thief or a banker murderer.

I'd like to see someone try to make a legitimate argument as to why these people are "athletes" in comparison to those who compete in real sports.

Alright let's use basic definitions to see if we can break through your terribly thick skull. This will be my one attempt.
*Ahem*

Athlete: Noun: A person who is proficient in sports and other forms of physical exercise.
Exercise: Noun: Activity requiring physical effort (Synonyms: practice - drill - training)
Physical: Adjective: Of or relating to the body
Effort: Noun: A vigorous or determined attempt

By putting forth effort they are exercising, by being good at an exercise they are an athlete. Gaming requires they put forth effort to build strategies, practice, and drill their skills (Note these are all synonyms of Exercise as well). By putting forth these efforts they are exercising, they might not be exercising as physically as YOUR definition of an athlete but they are exercising nonetheless. By being good at their game/practicing often they are athletes by definition. Their exertion isn't put forth in the same fields as say a power lifter but they are still training, working, and wearing themselves out practicing hard. You can try to game for 9+ hours a day and see how tired YOU are from doing it. It's exhausting. That's my argument.

Why are people all bent out of shape on the term eSport? It is a marketing term like Cloud computing. By a broad definition, the entire Internet is Cloud computing. I've seen the same argument of semantics on that, including the token webster's dictionary reference. As if you are making some sort of point defining words. If you want to come up with a short, catchy term that defines tournament style gaming competitions, I'm sure if it is memorable enough, people will listening. They add sport to the title to define it as competition, if you somehow believe someone thought these players become physically fit by playing games and you are arguing against that idea, you are in a weird place.

I hate golf. I have come to realize my hatred for golf is entirely irrational because I am bad at it. I have publicly embarrassed myself with my poor golf skills on greens I was already self consciously plotting along on. I believe we have people, who do not have a certain skill would rather think that they have some sort of life rather then lack an innate talent. I could rationalize away golf and say I am not some retired old guy so am too busy for golf. Golf must be for people with no life.
It reminds me of a guy I knew who said he hated Elder Scrolls Oblivion. I asked why and he said he could no get out of the dungeon. I know I am in a bad place when I bash on things other people enjoy just because it does not align with my interest or don't want to allocate any of my time to it.

By your definition, an overweight accountant who gets winded walking to his desk is an athlete because they are exerting an effort to get a clients' paperwork done before a deadline while chowing down on a doughnut.

I guess I'm an athlete too because I need to practice new techniques and learn new technologies for work to keep up on the competition. I deserve a medal and recognition for the sport of graphic design and website development. thumb.gif
