Appraisal of ASUS G53SW-XN1

Thread Starter
Well, my beautiful beast just took its last breath. This thing has been nothing but trouble since day one. It has performed flawlessly performance wise, but little things here and there just started to pile up so I figure I would just see what I could get for it "as is" and get a netbook, tablet or a cheap smartphone. The power jack is busted, it's been fixed by a friend before, broke again, fixed, and now broke again and I do believe it would require a new motherboard, so it's not really worth the trouble, but maybe someone could fix it or part it out. It has an i7 2630QM, 500gb hard drive, 6 gb of 1333mhz ram, Nvidia GTX 460m(which is removable, as well as the cpu, a 1920 X 1080 screen, backlit keyboard, bluetooth, wifi b/g/n. Does anyone know what I could get for it as a whole and as parted out, and whether or not I should try my luck here or take it to ebay. Like I said, it has to be sold "as is". I don't want to deceive anyone into thinking it's going to be a cheap, simple fix. Thanks.

I probably should have mentioned, it still powers on with the battery. But obviously I can't charge it.

Update: Okay, so I took it apart and desoldered the existing jack, and soldered an external jack that I got from Parts Express. It powers on, but eventually the motherboard will need to be replaced. I spent all last night playing Fallout 3 for the umpteenth time and it works flawlessly again. I didn't mention, which I should have that the power button and the buttons on the top left that control power modes and screen brightness don't work as the clips on the motherboard the hold the ribbons broke off completely. In order to turn it on, I have to pull up the right side of the keyboard and touch the terminals for the power to turn it on. This computer is always plugged in, but lives in sleep mode. As I said, I need an appraisal "as is" or parted out, thanks.

Hmm, if I weren't so strapped for cash right now, I'd shoot you an offer. Good luck, and I hope you find a new home for it.

Have you tried to RMA it? I would have done that when it first started acting up.
Well considering it's still got some powerful components in it, especially the CPU and GPU, you might be able to part it out for ~$350 +/- $50. Sold as a whole you could probably fetch $375-425. Having a broken motherboard that needs replacing can be quite costly, and most people wont want to deal with a PC they need to solder every once in a while. I know on ebay these are listed for quite a bit more, but from what I've seen nobody is bidding on them, let alone a unit that is defective.

I was kind of thinking the same thing. I wasn't really expecting to get more than $350 or so as a whole. The cpu and gpu aren't soldered to the motherboard so parting it out may be an option. I may just hang on to it, seeing as I got it working again with the new jack, even so I wouldn't feel comfortable selling it at a price that's anywhere near what used ones are going for. I would still sell it for $350 even though it's working again. Thanks for the appraisal.

I've replaced a lot of those power jacks. If it has been moving around the little slots that it plugs into will get rounded out. Do you know if they just plugged a new jack in or if they put some solder on the bottom? Even superglue can do the trick.

The first time the pin in the jack broke off, I had it replaced by a friend with a jack from Ebay that had a thicker pin, which worked fine for awhile, but that too became wonky, and then it just wouldn't work. I then drilled out a hole next to the original plug and soldered a jack from Parts-Express directly to the other jack, which eventually failed. So now I desoldered the jack from the motherboard and just soldered two wires to the new jack which so far, so good. The jack problem seems to be over, but I wouldn't feel comfortable selling it as it is, I would most definitely sell it as a "parts only" type deal, even though it works just fine now with the exception of having to lift the right side of the keyboard up to touch the terminals where the ribbon for the power button should be.
