Proposed Backpack Case - Page 2

I still think that a custom mITX frame and an AIO is the best option for this.

well, i was thinking with the FT03-mini, he can actually build some kind of ventilation into the backpack and can actually run the system w/o removing it from the backpack (which is what i figured he wanted to do for the backpack requirement) it's hard for me to see running the SG05 w/o removing it from the backpack.... i suppose it can be done, but not sure how the ventilation would work out. FT03-mini has enough "extra space" built in (feet and IO cluster) that allows for good ventilation solutions to be built into the backpack whereas the SG05 would definitely require exterior reenforcing frame to be welded to allow airflow properly.

I'll have a rough sketch done by the end of the week which will give you guys a better idea of what I am thinking about doing.

I'm definitely switching over to mITX though.

yah considering a z77 ITX board can sport a GTX690 there is really no reason to go mATX these days. besides, mATX will be too wide for that backpack anyway. with ITX, you might be able to go with a slim design and use a riser to mount the GPU that allows you to make it even smaller while retaining the horsepower of ivybridge and gtx690.

The only issue i see with it is... What happens when someone picks up the backpack and accidentally drops it? tongue.gif You arent going to have much fall protection with a fullsized GPU and a normal sized heatsink. I personally would end up just getting an A10 and possibly adding a GPU for hybrid xfire.

Spikes that shoot out of it if anybody but myself touches it.

It will only be used as something of a traveling system if I'm going over to a friend's place and to be used as a conversation piece. I'll probably try mounting a small window in it at some point as well probably where the three tie-downs on the main body of the backpack are. Just to add that little extra bit of flair to it.

Honestly, if a rigid frame is constructed, application of some quality dense foam in critical area's of the frame(such as the corners and midpoints of surfaces) would be more than ample enough protection from fall damage. Consider a 17 inch laptop with moving hard-drives. Many are engineered to withstand fall-damage quite well, and don't even employ the use of dampening material.

This build will literally have no moving parts.
I don't think structural integrity and resilience is too large of an obstacle to overcome.

Laptops do not have 3-5lb heatsinks attached to their cpu and gpu only secured by a little bit of plastic. The GPU and CPU cooler are going to need to be secured significantly better than it would with a normal case.

You're under the assumption that he is using a normal cooler.

He'll most likely use a low profile cooler or an AIO. In both cases, cooler weight is inconsequential.
