This.

However, have you all forgotten that Microsoft put in a patent for what is essentially an upgradeable console? I'm too tired/drunk to Google it but it hasn't been that long ago. I know you all are talking about what hasn't been capable with the Xbox 360 and blah blah but doesn't it at least bring hope to the console market? I've always wondered why consoles go years with the same specs which hurts innovation but if they could add some more GHz here and some more RAM there every so often then not only could they keep the price point up without doing a complete makeover of the console but they could keep devs happy and give them more to play with. I think that's what Microsoft wants to do which will drive Sony to do the same. It could ultimately be really bad for the PC market who IMO strives on the lack of competitiveness from the console market.

We shall see..............................

I don't really think I want them to make an upgradable console. I don't want to have to pay extra at a certain point in time to make my console play newer games, that's why I own (and spend a ****load on) a pc. Not to mention one reason why consoles can be pushed so far on old hardware is because it's homogenous, no different components in systems that devs need to consider when coding a new game.

Also, I could care less at this point for a new generation of consoles and gaming in general. This craze with graphics (I'll admit I've been heavily infected) has turned the quality of newer titles (replay ability, story, etc) to **** IMHO. I'd rather game devs start focusing more on making better games from the story/replay ability/mechanics aspect than make them shinier.

Hmm, are you so sure there's currently an obsession with graphics? I haven't seen anything come out trading on graphics alone in a while, id go so far as to say a large number of games look very much like they did a few years back. Crysis 2 didn't even ship with dx11 support, although they seem to have returned to the graphics philosophy with Crysis 3.

As for pushing consoles further due to homogenous design, I think its more a case of pushing them further by downscaling texture resolutions, turning off AA/AF and running in low resolution.

It would be interesting to see benchmarks comparing consoles to similarly spec'd PCs, I strongly suspect that "massive" directX overhead is a myth.

I'm certain there has been an obsession with graphics lately, read any op Ed article about the state of gaming. I'm not the only one that feels this way, it's because pushing polygons has become the game industry's MHz battle, and they're spending all their budgets on graphics. Look at the budgets for AAA games today, theyre getting to be on par with movies, and the only reason for that is graphics and voice acting. But it feels like they aren't paying enough attention to story and plots anymore, figuring they can keep consumers happy with motion blur, dynamic lighting and weather simulations. The fact that we complain because crysis 2 was only released in dx10 is a sign that were telling them actively to pursue graphics above all else, and I hate that.

As for the homogenous design, this has been discussed by game devs and console alike, when you know exactly what all your consumers are using spec wise you don't need to make sure of compatibility with the gpu CPU etc and program for the one set of hardware

Sure, I've seen it claimed loads of times that homogenous end user hardware lets you tweak loads of extra performance out of your games. Have I ever seen any evidence supporting it? Hell no.

And the games devs don't write their games to support x number of hardware configs, that's the job of DirectX, OpenGL and the hardware drivers. I've never seen any evidence to suggest the performance overhead is anything other than minimal.

As for Crysis, the reason people complained is because they were boasting about features they didn't include in their release. Not to mention the fact that its crysis, its kind of supposed to look good biggrin.gif

There are still plenty of games released, the vast majority of which scale down low enough to run on consoles. I don't think you can really claim anything running on hardware that old is "all about the graphics" tongue.gif

If we are speaking about XBox 360 then actually you can build a PC for about the same cost as a current gen console which runs circles around it. I recently built a PC for family net browsing for about 250 euros which can run games at 1280x1024 with AA on at ~60 fps which run on consoles at 1280x720 without any AA and crappier textures. I mean the same games that run on consoles like Portal, Portal 2, Unreal 3, etc. Hell it can even play Crysis with minor compromises.

The PC was Sempron 140 (unlocked to 2 core, OC to 3.5 GHz) + cheap 7xx series mobo, cheap PSU, 8 GB of RAM, 10 euro case and cheapest HDD I found plus a 5770 GFX card which I valued at approx 80 euros. Hey, its even DX 11 capable wink.gif

Nothing wrong with having a pretty game. Just like chicks,cars, we all deny that looks aren't important,but our primal instinct tell us that looks are what you would go for. It is then you'll look into further and see explore the aspects and what other things the game as to offer..

I upgrade to play the latest games with great graphics not to play some game that looks 20 years old. I am willing to compromise a little for a few exceptions but this is 2012 not 1990 or 2000.One of the many reasons why I refuse to try out some of the popular "indie" games and the fact that they aren't as great as a lot of the AAA titles. I have played a few good indie titles(Orcs must die for example) but most of them haven't been to the standard of AAA titles. It's not being shallow, I just value my eyes.

I can tell you, crysis wouldn't have been appealing if it weren't for the visuals. People deny this, but it's true that people judge a game first on looks then on gameplay no matter how many times people say otherwise. Crysis 1 was great nevertheless...in both fun factor and wow factor.

Current gen consoles cost less then that though. And I'm not really convinced that's going to spit out better visuals then what some of the console exclusive titles spit out. Especially some of the PS3 ones.

You're at the very end of the console's life though, could you have built a PC that was better than consoles for that same price, 4 years ago? And when the next-gen consoles come out, around $400-500, I'm willing to be you'll be hard pressed to build a PC for their price that will equal what they will be delivering, for a least a year or two afterward. On top of that, try buying a PC for $400-500 that will last you 8 years and still play every new release at 30fps at least. If you had tried that with the 360 you would have an E6600 with a 7600GT and 512MB of RAM, would you get 30fps on BF3 with that setup? I'm not even sure it would run on 512MB of RAM on PC.

Exactly. I play games at 1440p60. Consoles play games at 720p30.

Just in terms of pixels and not even all the AA, Tess, Dynamic Shadowing, SSAO, etc.

2560x1440x60 = 221184000 px
1280x720x30 = 27648000 px

The console produces 12.5% of what the PC produces in terms of JUST pixels.
I don't even want to get started on the fact that you can access everything on PC for free or pennies.

Consoles are always popular the first few years they are released and they tend to be fairly close to PC gaming in terms of image quality during those years. As time moves on though, the consoles inevitably become more outdated and the gap widens considerably until the next console generation drops and it happens all over again. I for one want consoles to come out asap so we don't deal with directx 9 ports anymore.

I could not agree more. I'm so sick of awesome games being either 'exclusive' to one console or being god awful ports. Exclusive titles don't even make sense anymore. Most games run on DirectX or OpenGL, not like back in the day when they had to run on certain hardware.
