It depends; to start you could set the pump directly on the case then try puting some weight or a clamp on it and run it until its hot to see if the case metal warms up too. As far as I know, most powder coats are thin enough to still allow a good amount of heat transfer.

Yeah, except it will be like putting the pump on a drum. The case will amplify the pump sounds considerably. Consider the Swiftech Heatsink. It has rubber feet to help isolate the pump vibrations and noise from other resonant surfaces.

He wanted a quick way to see if his powder coat would transfer heat, not a permanent solution; In a permanent solution, heat tape provides quite a bit of vibration absorbtion, depending on how thick it is.

I have not seen any different thicknesses of heat tape, however, my knowledge in that aspect is limited. The whole issue of decoupling is somewhat defeated by using a case as a heat sink. Pure logic leads me to that conclusion. Efficient passage of heat requires solid contact, which is the opposite of what you are trying to accomplish by decoupling.

As an experiment, OK. As a solution, not so sure its worth discussing.

When the options are no cooling or case sink...

Personally, I am going to try suspending an MCP35X directly between two AP-15s blowing at it without using a heatsink. Hopefully that will be enough because I have exactly 80mm between the two fans.

There's too much fear mongering over DDC heat in this forum lately. I've been running this 35x sitting on 4 rubber harddrive washers for a year in the bottom of my perforated lian li case, and it gets warm air from the rad next to it. No heatsink just slightly warmed air and it's not dead or fried.

@tsm106 - Is it running 100% all the time?

Mine has been running about a year without a heatsink, but its speed is temp controlled from 10-50% duty cycle....(again, 50% duty cycle is good for about 90% flow, so there's no need to go higher in most setups).

Heck no and that's the key that the pump runs very low duty cycle, so all you need is some, not a hurricane of air flow and it's fine.

I only have mine at 100% for filling and bleeding. At least 90% of the time they're on the 20% setting (about 1700rpm) and they're now set to hit 36% (about 3000rpm) for high loads as they still remain quiet at that setting and it makes no difference to load temps above that.

+1. Amen to that brother. I am getting the Swiftech heatsinks for my pumps, but it is to help lower temps of my loop, not just the pump.
