depends on clock speeds, and cores, too many variables, the i5s are usually High OC Duals or Quads, The Second gen i5 will probably be better, as the i3 are usually just Dualies or Duals with HT, even taking into account the 10% IPC difference.

Not any processor specifically. I remember posting this a year back when the 2nd gen was new and it turned out that some of the i3 2nd gens were better than the i5 first gen. I was wondering if that was the case this year as well. I also vaguely remember seeing a list of all the processors available at that time, and their ranking based on their computing capabilities.

IMHO,
Any quad core i5 > i3. If dual core, then id have to know a bit more about each cpu.

3rd gen is about 10% faster for the same clock speed from what I hear, so the core 2nd gen i5 will be faster than any core i3.
quad core vs dual... anything threaded quad always win. even single threaded it wont matter as all the core i chips pretty much run at similar clock speeds across the range relative to the sku.

there is no quad core mobile i5. Both the Mobile i3 and i5 have been dual core with 4 threads. The only quad core has been the i7 QM mobile line. Which is 4 cores and 8 threads.

Full notebook i5 (Not low voltage) will beat a full mobile i3 every time in 3DMark CPU Test or a Cinebench 64-bit or any other performance test
Even with the ultra low voltage chips same story i5 ULV will beat a i3 ULV regardless of IB or Sandy Bridge
