Can CPU And Mem both be overclocked stable?

Thread Starter
I have the AMD 4000+ Sandy, Crucial Ballistix Tracers 1GB(2X512MB) PC4000, and ASUS A8N-E. The ram ran DDR400 stock at 2-2-2-8 and now i just set it to what it should be running at, DDR500 2.5-4-4-10. To achieve that i had to overclock my CPU from 2.4 to 2.5. Not a big difference... I was wondering if I could overclock the CPU a bit more without underclocking my memory. Currently the cpu is running 250 MHz at 10X multi, 1.5 v core, and rams volt is 2.9. Any ideas?

Try it at a 11x multi. Would keep your ram the same and up the cpu. My sandy does 250x11 at 1.475v.

You can overclock your CPU as much as you want without having to underclock the memory. If you don't know how the dividers work on the A8N-E, here they are (the names are misleading):

"DDR 400" = 1/1
"DDR 333" = 5/6
"DDR 266" = 2/3
"DDR 200" = 1/2

As long as it's set to DDR 400 or higher, the memory will not operate at less than the FSB or CPU frequency, as ASUS likes to call it

If, for example, you are using a FSB of 300MHz, your memory would also be running at 300MHz (DDR 600). By using a divider you can avoid problems with running the memory way too fast. I hope this is what you wanted to know and not something you already knew.

That RAM is said to work well @ 2.9 but I would shave it back to 2.8-2.85v ... less chance of killing the RAM that way.

yea, when i clocked my ram to DDR500, i though it was stable...I was just proven wrong when I went to play my games. I would try to run Need For Speed Carbon and it would load to the main loading screen then my pc would just reboot. Then I tried playing Swat 4 and Battlefield 2 and both did the same. So I went back into BIOS and clocked the RAM back to DDR400, set the CPU Back to 200 x12 and the voltages to auto and the games run again. So I guess it was stable but not game stable. Should I just keep my ram the way it is and overclock my cpu? I think the reason Im having issues is due to my power supply, it has some weak amps on the 12volt rails so i guess it cant handle much. But anyways, Im using stock heatsink and fan so would I be able to hit 250 x11 safely?

I'm using PC 3500 memory and running it at 270MHz with no stability problems. I have the memory divider set to DDR400 (1:1) and the FSB set to 270 so the CPU and memory are both running at 270MHz.

I suggest you download memtest86 and use that to make sure your memory is going to be stable.

alright i pushed my ram back to 3-4-4-8 and then overclocked my cpu to 250 x11

But I Had stability issues with Prime 95 and most of my games. So I back it down to 240 x11 and my timings to 2.5-4-4-10. Now its rock solid stable, I ran Prime overnight and I woke up with no errors. I noticed that on 2.7 my cpu would jump to 54C on the first test for prime. On 2.6 it stays around 50. So the only thing holding me back must be the stock cooling?

I'm not sure, and don't quote me on this, but could you run the HT Link at a slower speed and turn down your vcore and get better temps? (I'm not even sure if turning the HT Link down could help you any there, but why not try it)

If someone knows better, correct me.

Yeah, he's right... if your bus is running somewhere around 250MHz you should use a 4x HT multiplier. That would give you a perfect 1000MHz.

As far as vCore... you might not need 1.52v for that speed. Did you get there gradually or just use the highest setting right off the bat?
