680 SLI Poor Performance

Thread Starter
Had a refernce Zotac 680 for a few months and then yesterday I got in my EVGA 680 SC from newegg (free bl2! wheee.gif). I put the new card into the second slot, both 6pins into the card, and the extra 6 pin at the bottom of the mobo for extra power. In BF3 I get framerates in the 60's at ultra, which is way lower than I expected. Also after about 10 minutes of play, the screen goes black and locks up. EVGA PrecisionX shows gpu1 and 2 at 50-70% load and power draw. Any ideas?

Edit: Going to run 3dMark11 to see if my scores are about right.

okay, 3Dmark11 score is going to help determine if the cards are under-perfoming, I would also like to say check all cables, maybe you got a loose cable somewhere that could cause the monitor go black, then back up

So I switched the cards so that the SC was in slot 1 and the reference was in slot 2, no more crashing. Now my frames are hardly better than one card and each gpu runs at on 50% usage. What the heck it going on?

Just ran a Unigine Heaven 3.0 bench.

FPS: 129.6
Scores: 3264
Min FPS: 13.1
Max FPS: 232.5

Render: direct3d11
Mode: 1920x1080 4xAA fullscreen
Shaders: high
Textures: high
Filter: trilinear
Anisotropy: 8x
Occlusion: enabled
Refraction: enabled
Volumetric: enabled
Tessellation: normal

The min fps is a little scary but Ill assume its just error. The score I got seems to show that the cards are working fine and they just aren't optimized for BF3. Do these scores look good?

you will need to flash your bios on one of the cards I believe so they think they are identical

if i remember correctly you can have issues using different cards, not always, but mainly when they are different eg. one of yours is superclocked so they will not match 100%

edit: sli combines the two cards to act as if they were one card, they dont combine them to work on top of each other. so they have to match.

otherwise try updating your drivers.

may i ask why you bought another gtx 680 that did not match your current one? was it cheaper or something? i have never used newegg as i live in new zealand but from what i hear they are good with returns, you should probably return it and get a matching one. you may be able to get it to work fine otherwise, that would be worst case scenario.

I got the SC for 480 where a reference edition would be 500, odd huh? I figured I could just run the lower clocked card as the master card and it would downclock the sc to match the reference. I may flash the zotac to bring it up the SC, though.

3dMark11 :

I found another person who had an identical setup but scored 2000 points higher. Also had his 2500k oc'd to 5ghz though, which would help in the physics tests.

yeah thats a pretty poor score for 680 sli. I believe i got around 11500 with my 570 sli. but that was overclocking the hell of it (modded the bios on the cards to increase voltage limits etc.) got around 10500 just normal overclocks.

You can use different cards for SLI, it has been like that for a long time now.

Try running with just the SC card and see if is having issues.

Disabled SLI and ran with just the SC, results:

http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/4348221

Thought it was a good score but I looked at a couple of benches and it looks like the avg. is in the 10k range.
