HTPC Build Log

Thread Starter
I was planning on selling my mobo and RAM when I upgraded my mobo + RAM, and using that money to upgrade my current rig, but I figure having a Linux box*, throw in a remote, a nice looking case, a big HDD, put all my music on it, and have it fold, and be happy. Plus its nice having a second PC in case this one goes down.

I plan on selling the 1GB of RAM I have when I buy the G. Skill HZ (1GB) for my rig. Get rid of the DDR. Then sell the DDR, get 256MB of DDR2-533 (Wintec-X) DDR2-533, since I have a matching stick sitting next to me for a total of 512MB. With the left over, depending on how much I have, get a Celeron D 356 or wait it out until Christmas for it.

Then for Christmas, I'm getting an Asus P5B-E, keep the mobo I got, and use that with the stuff above.

The list ATM:
Intel Celeron 356:

Questions:
1) I'm willing to learn Linux. I know the extreme basics from a few weeks of being stranded on Ubuntu - and I'm thinking of putting Fedora on it. How good would that be for a HTPC? Should I just go with Windows Media Center/XP Pro?

2) Should I go with the 2-Tone, or the solid black in your opinion?

3) Is there a way, in Linux or Windows, if I have my music on that computer, to play the music through speakers hooked up to that computer through my computer? Like, say if I want to play "ChozartLikesPants.mp3" and its on the HTPC, I get to the folder its on through my computer via file sharing, click on the file, and it plays on the HTPC instead of this computer?

4) Kinda off topic, but on the folding site there is word of having the X1600, X1300, and X1800 being to officially fold. The X1600XT can already fold, since it has the same ratio (3:1) as the X1900 series, and its about as fast as a 3.4Ghz P4 in PPD. Since I might do that depending on money (get a cheap X1600 or X1300), is there a difference still, like there used to be, with AIW versions being slower than the "real" counterpart?

5) Does that case use the standard size PSU size? Can't tell myself from that pic.

I refrain from comment about your musical choice... ROFL.

Have you considered the Pentium D 805 instead of the Celeron?

Come on! Good musical selection, no?!

I was thinking about the 805, but I'm concerned about the heat. I'm either going to have very few low CFM fans, or near the whole thing passive. I want it near silent. Don't think the 805 would like that. Even if it did, it would be $40 I'd have to shave off somehwhere else.

Heat and D805 are best friends indeed.

Let me put this through my wrangler.

Am I missing a PSU?

Sorry

1) Staying away from this. Not a Linux guru. I think if you're willing to go through the learning curve, Linux will save you $$.

2) Whatever looks better to you

3) If you want to play that specific song, both computers will explode. To play it through the other computer, I think you'll need a remote desktop utility, in which you actually take control of the HTCP

4) Not sure about that. However, I wonder how folding on a (hot) video card like that will impact your desire for quietness.

5) Yes: http://www.nmediapc.com/htpc200.htm Under specification, you'll see Power Suppy: Support ATX.

Now, regarding the P5B-E, is that for your main rig or for this HTCP.. I was a bit confused about that.

Thanks.

Thinking of getting that $80 passive X1300 or the $105 passive X1600 on newegg. Strap a 80mm fan to it with a fan controller. Turn it up when I can deal with it.

The P5B-E is for my main rig. Probably gunna drop to a DS3 or a P5B though and save $25 or so. I doubt I'd be using RAID anyway.

I think I've seen that PSU somewhere....

Was planning on getting that or the FSP 450W for $36 on the 'egg and be adventurous.
