7950 Vapor X Voltage Locked? - Page 15

Also what is the maximum temp you should expect out of VRM1 in gpu-z? for example my gpu was 59c/VRM2 62c/VRM1 103c. Why is VRM1 so much higher than the rest?

Did some further reading, aparently 120c is the limit on these, im going to play with the overclock and get that down to ~80, i will have to sacrifice speed but i shouldn't be so greedy anyway! biggrin.gif

My 7950 Vapor-X's VRM temps were hitting 90+ c. But the VRM on my 7950 OC Edition I switched over to don't exceed 80c with a 50mhz higher clock and higher voltage, so I'm thinking there's a design flaw in that regard with the Vapor-X.

Cheers for the reply! Im going to wind back the OC a little, get the VRM's to around the 80ish mark.. I didn't have a lot of time on my hands last night when i OC'd it so i just chucked a couple of values into trixx and hit apply then played with it for 30mins.. Ive got half a day to kill on saturday so ill do it properly then and try and get the optimum Speed/Heat/Noise ratio thumb.gif

I suspect this is one of the reasons it is volt locked, if you put more through it the vrm's heat up and they would have major RMA nightmares..

Also have to sort out my dvi and hdmi issue i posted about earlier.. mad.gif.. anyone have any ideas??

i think the excessive vrm's heat on the vapor-x model 7950 is due to the very small (tiny) vrm's heatsink look here the vrms heatsink is almost zero !

They have thermal pads on the bottom of the cooler which probably do jack all! I was just getting my OC sorted, have the vrm's at 85c max at the moment with a 1100/1400/1065v/50%fan. Was busy tweaking in realtime in bf3 when battlelog went down for maintence.. im pretty happy with it where its at but ill continue to tweak it a little, if i can get a little more speed out of it without moving the VRM temp upto high ill be stoked!

1100 Mhz with 1.065v is very good. if you achieve complete stability in Heaven 3.0, BF3, Crysis 2 , 3DMark 11 your overclock can be considered stable.

Remember to find proper Power Limit for your card , at 1140MHz on GPU works only when Power Limit is set up for +15 ,
at +20 maximum stable was 1085MHz

Has anyone tried flashing their 7950 vapor x with the 7970 vapor x bios? Guess that might still run into the voltage lock problems.

Got a 7950 turning up next week so I'll keep people updated on whether the voltage is locked or not..
