7950 Vapor X Voltage Locked? - Page 44

I think it's not mentioned anywhere, but I asked amazon customer support about the card. I was looking for the 8+8 power pin revision(only visible detail that you can use to spot the newest revision), and they confirmed that the card they were selling was that version. I also looked the EAN stated on amazon product page on google to be sure this was the version I wanted to buy(not many details in the amazon product page), and the search results on other e-shops showed a Sapphire Radeon 7950 Vapor-X with 8+8. So I was pretty sure I was going to get the latest revision.

Summing upp: Asked them, checked and rechecked and although I was aware that I could get one of the oldest revisions, I got wat I wanted biggrin.gif

The 1196-xx-xxx number only indicates whether the card is full retail or OEM version.
P/N number determines the exact model and revision.

Fwiw I have the 8+8 pin Vapor-X, ASIC 88%.

Which P/N do you have?

I think I heard that 004SA and 104SA are the 8+8 pin new vapors.

Trying to decide if it's worth getting a 6+8 pin with the Vram heat issues.,,

Hi Dogzear. I have a 8+8 7950 Vapor-X and it's p/n is 004SA. Overclocks like a beast and stays really cool, idle or under stress testing. My ASIC score is quite low(56.4%), but the card does 1200/1575 on stock voltages through Sapphire Trixx 4.4.0bMod(haven't tried to overclock/overvoltage above that, just put the sliders at that mark, stress tested a bit, Metro2033ed a lot lol) and the card barely noticed it...core temp in mid 50's and VRMs 2 or 3 degrees above that. If you can get a 8+8 7950 Vapor-X you won't be dissappointed.

Something must be wrong with your settings [power limit?] because those temps are almost certainly impossible to reach.
My settings are wrong? Are my temperatures too high?May be, I've just replicated what othes have done in this thread and other pages. It's the first time I've really overclocked a card(a unclockable Sapphire6800gt and a voltage locked Gigabyte6850oc who barely did 100mhz more can't compare to 300mhz oc of the Vapor X), and I'm learning as I go biggrin.gif

I set the Power Li in Trixx at +20(that's what everyone is using), so that can't be. Any suggestions?

BTW, Feliz Año Nuevo muchacho!! Happy New Years Eve to everyone thumb.gif

VRM still climbs to over 100c with ~1.2v or more and 100% load.

No, haha, your temperatures are incredible. Maybe the 8+8 VaporX has an improved cooling design but that seems unlikely.

My 8+6 pin with the latest bios, running at 1200core/1800memory @ 1.137 vcore/1.606 memory volt sticks goes around 59-64c at 40-50% fan speed. The big difference is VRM temps, where mine will stick around 70-85c under full load. That's with a dedicated fan blowing on the PCB in the VRM area.

I mean, if you card really is doing what you say, that's amazing. Really. I just have to think that some settings arent applying properly, because... well, those temperatures are sooooo good tongue.gif

Are you running the fan at 100%?

---

Hey pill monster, have you tried flashing your cards bios to the lastest version? If you havent, http://www.sapphiretech.com/archive/drivers/299-2e210-201sa_634868704759898677.zip

Well, it seems the 8+8 have an improved vrm desing/cooling/heatsink? That was the reason I was looking for this particular revision. I've been stress testing using 3dmark11 free/Furmark, not on for hours and hours, so maybe my good temperatures come from only 20 minutes of furmark and 2 passes of 3dmark at a time. I'm computer savvy but in overclock I'm a total noob!. My case is a CM HAF932 with that giant side fan blowing directly to the side of the card(i think the problematic VRM in other revisions, VRM1, is located on that side of the card). I did set a custom fan profile(nice graph they have) in Sapphire Trixx 4.4.0bMOD that maxed 100% at 75º core, I think.

Well, thats great. I wonder what they have done to improve the design.

As for us with the other less amazing revisions, does anyone think it is safe to put some thermal tape across the VRMs on the BACK of the PCB, and put a VRM heatsink on top of it? This way those pesky VRMs have a heatsink on both sides. And I'd expect it to be highly effective, as a fan blowing on top of those exposed VRMs lowers temps by nearly 10c.

I think this is safe... I just want confirmation.
