I'm running it on Auto fan and the fan speed doesn't go above 46% at 1.2Ghz.
At stock it maxes out at 36% fan speed - this cooler is a beast.

I have been watching the 7950 Vapor X for awhile now. I was shocked when it showed discontinued on Newegg. Luckily it now shows as out of stock instead of discontinued. After reading this thread I am not sure I even want the 7950 anymore. I was planning on overclocking it and if it is voltage locked then I will be lucky to break 1000-1100. I have been switching back and forth between the 670 and 7950. The 670 seems to boost well into the 1200s at stock voltage with most non reference cards. Since I've seen prices around $350 for a 670 I am starting to lean in that direction again. I have been running gtx 460s in sli.

If the price was the same between a 670 and a 7950, with comparable cooling, which would you choose?

If both were the same price, I'd pick the 670 in a heart beat. It's really no contest because at stock a 670 would beat a 7950 not destroy but beat it by a good margin.

Having run both cards, I'm more happy with the headroom on the 7950. You also don't need to buy the Vapor-X, the Gigabyte 7950 has unlocked voltages. However, I'm guessing this voltage lock issue should be fixed some time in the future, given it seems to be more of a issue with the Boost feature. If pricing was the same? Odds are the 7950 because I want to run three monitors. At that price tag it's more about what features and what you want to do with the card rather then how they perform, given they perform quite differently with different settings and resolutions.

To be fair on the 7950, even at stock voltages I'm pushing 1060/1600 which has me performing with my old overclocked 670 FTW (Wasn't the best overclocker, but did manage 10k graphic scores in 3DMark and 1260 in Heaven.)

I find it hard to beleive that any major GPU maker would lock voltages on a card that has a cooler designed specifically for overclocking; otherwise it would be pointless to have custom coolers.

'locked voltage' must be a software issue,

I have done exactly the same for the past week or so, except I've thought the 660 ti was more comparable to the 7950. Honestly one of the only reasons I wanna stick with AMD is because of the Sleeping Dogs deal. biggrin.gif I'm just waiting to see if this voltage issue it completely settled before I pull the trigger...

I'd probably go with the 670 if they were the same price. Fortunately a 670 costs about $130 more than a 7950 here, so the choice was simple tongue.gif
