7950 Vapor X Voltage Locked? - Page 92

I ran Furmark with the same settings (1280x720 + MSAA 2X) to measure Amps @ 1200MHz.
Farcry as demanding as it is, comes nowhere close :-).

Current leakage is a normal thing and is basically energy lost, dissipated as heat in the circuit on internal resistances. I guess you could probably drop yours down a bit with improved cooling.

We probably need more input from others to get reasonable conclusions, but as it seems you need less voltage but more amps, and I need less amps but more voltage for pretty much exactly the same total power at the same clock speeds.

Okay, in order to get a more fair comparison between the bios, I ran heaven a once for each..

Heaven Bench V09
66c Max Core
90c Max VRM1
81c Max VRM2
185.75w VRM1 Out
52.00w VRM2 Out
1.081v Min Voltage
1011 40.1FPS

Heaven Bench V08
65C Max Core
90C Max VRM1
80C Max VRM2
181.3W VRM1 Out
51.25W VRM2 Out
1.079v Min Voltage
1010 40.1FPS

So it looks like all the changes I thought I saw were somehow screwups on my part. At first I had really different results between the two.. then I realized I had the fan at 65% on one of the tests.. had to redo. It looks like V09 is ever so slightly more power hungry, slightly higher temps.. and it also got a bit less time to warm up/idle after the test.

The scores are so low since its maxed at 2560x1440, btw.

You got 1 point higher score, so there goes your 4W ;-)
just kidding. looks pretty much the same to me. Within measurement error.

what's the max core clock you can get without artifacts in demanding apps like 3d mark 2013, FC3 and so on?
It was dumb of me not to use GPU-Z and get the average amperage. I dont feel like running thru it again. I have to restart 3 times in order to change bios.. 1ce to change bios, 1ce to install drivers, 1ce to extend overclock limits.. Pain in da butt.

As for max clocks w/out artifacts,
With an auto fan curve topping at about 55%, 1200/1770 memory.
With fan @ 70%, 1250/???? [Never tried to go further on the memory, I was running 1750 during the tests just so I had no worries about memory freezing it up]
With fan @ 100%, 1275/1900
I've tried 1300 but with no luck. It wont freeze but it'll artifact pretty quickly. Like mid 50c IIRC.

So its a very temp limited card. Im sure you know that 100% is quite loud, though.. so I tend to opt for the auto fan and 1200 on the core. I'm hoping though, that with new thermal pads and paste, I can maybe hit 1250/1900 with a lower fan speed.
Just for comparison, this is the dropped test.. at 65% fan speed (Click to show)
Heaven Bench + Long Idle V09
68c Max Core
97C Max VRM1
86C Max VRM2
191.5W
52.00w
1.076v Min
1012 40.1FPS

Opened mine up, looks just like the pictures we have lying around already. 2mm VRM, 1mm memory pads.

Thermal paste on the diode wasnt bad at all, a bit excessive, but barely.

However I nearly had a hard attack when I got some paste on the little chips around the main diode. I hope its OK? I couldnt get it all off.

Ran heaven. Weird results.

GPU Core max is 65c
VRM1 max unchanged
VRM2 max 79c [-1c]
VRM1 out..... 192w
VRM1 out 50w
39.7FPS 999 core.
All the other runs were 40.1, somehow this one is down a bit?

Ran it two more times, still cant hit 40.1
65C Core/ 88c VRM1/ 79c VRM2
182.5w/47.625w
40.0FPS/ 1009
Min Voltage 1.075v

Its just so weird that reapplying the cooler and putting on some paste I had lying improves temps ever so slightly, but reduces framerate <1%

Is there a way to set more than 1300mV in Trixx? A modded version or something? I need a tad bit more to get to a nice even number of 1200mhz. As of now 1.225V +/- 5mV is all i can squeeze out of it. frown.gif

I don't think you would want to go any higher

Temps are kept in bay, so why not? It surely can't cause that much more degradation with such low voltage now, can it? GPU isn't close hitting 70c under gaming load. VRM's, pretty much the same as core.

you can unlock extreme OC mode in MSI AB, you can search how to do that on this forum or via google, its easy. however, doing so is a good way to toast your card. its not supported by MSI and is intended for LN2 users and such i think

Check this post

Just don't forget to remove that tag after rebooting or just make a new shortcut.
