Need help on how to install old XP HDD into new W7 Pro Case? Will it work with the new processor?

Noob Here... I know it sounds wierd but the peripherals are breaking on my 9yr old Pentium4 XP computer but I want to keep the 140GB of HDD files without having to buy an SSD. Most of the files are old and I need to keep them, they are related to Autocad and it also has thousands of 6MP photos.

Obviously a noob question, so my question is can I install the HDD from the old P4 computer into my new I5-2500K one? and will it run the XP programs since I have W7 Pro OEM in the new one?

Depends on the interface used, SATA will be fine but many current PC's don't use IDE anymore, can you let us know more details please ?

It will work, but I doubt that the programs will run. You could always grab the files and run them on your Win 7 version of the program if you have them.

Grab the files, What do you mean? Do I grab them after the install or can I possibly run both OS in the same computer but independent of each other and change the boot order when i want to use the older XP one? The older one also has Microsoft Office 2010. Thanks

Techinically, you can, you "may" get a prompt to either load a win7 or winxp partition on boot. May being the key word. This is of course assuming you put both drives in and connect them via sata.

Since you're changing the motherboard and I guess you have an OEM version of XP, 99% of the time, you will need to make a clean installation since the license is tied to the motherboard.
