PSU direction

Thread Starter
I've got two new builds and I was wondering what direction do some mount the psu in regards to the fan. I built a new server and the fan is directed to the mobo and not the back panel. I did this because the cords would be closer to the bottom but never knew the pros or cons. I would imagine the fan can face down because of the space below. Ive mounted many regular psu this way but always wanted to know what others thought and do. What are the pros and cons? Suggestions?

The fan on your PSU is an intake fan which means the exhaust is the rear by the power switch.  So it almost doesn't matter.

Yes, like the above user said the fan on the PSU is an intake fan.
So let's say in your case you have a bottom mounted power supply, you could make the PSU face upwards which will draw hot air from your case, pros is that you have cooler components inside your case for eg. video card, the con is that the hot air intake is bad for your PSU.
The other way is to mount the fan facing downwards - which is the better way IMO, pro is cooler air gets into the PSU, con is maybe your other components will run hotter.
Of course were talking like minimal change in temps here.
But still I like to feed the PSU cool air from the outside, remember that the fan on the PSU is probably the least fan you have control over, meaning that when the PSU gets hotter the fan speeds higher = more noise.
I'd personally go for the PSU fan facing down, but make sure your case has enough space to let air intake to the PSU, most cases you'll find are a bit raised to allow air to enter the PSU.
